This is my first ever entry into Tara’s galley meme. But before we get to the photos I have a story to tell.

A few weeks ago I went to visit the offices of Huddersfield based company myphotowall.com in order to pick up a very generous donation for the Joseph Salmon Trust.

Those of you who follow Englishmum’s blog may have seen her myfotowall competition a few months ago. If you did you’ll already know that the company produce huge bespoke photo prints that cover entire walls. And if you don’t, well you know it now.

These aren’t the big posters you get in Ikea where you can choose between a black and white photo of New York or a bunch of over saturated tulips. No, myphotowall.com allows you to upload your own photo to their website, make it exactly the same size as the wall you are covering, and then get it delivered right to your door. Bloody marvelous.

Here’s an example:

While I was there Stephen, the managing director of the company, showed me some examples of his product on the walls of his offices.

They were absolutely stunning.

When I first heard about myfotowall I must admit I was skeptical. I had visions of huge tacky glossy pixilated overgrown posters. But as soon as I walked in the office my mind was changed instantly.

These wallcoverings are truly wonderful. The matt finish and deliciously tactile feel of the paper lend it a subtly and class that I really wasn’t expecting. I instantly made the leap from “that’s a pretty cool idea” to “I want one now damnit!”.

To be honest I was a little confused about how it could looked so good. Especially as Stephen walked me though the process of creating one on their website using some of my own photos from Flickr, and assured me that despite their crappy resolution they would come out just fine.

Apparently Myfotowall have developed a way of converting graphics so as to eliminate all visible signs of pixilation. In addition the process you use to upload and resize your photo to the exact dimensions of your wall also warns you if you are zooming in on the photo beyond the systems ability to make it look good. That’s a process that’s patented by the way, so you’re not going to find it anywhere else.

Let’s face it, I was always going to be positive about myfotowall after they made such a generous donation to the walk. But I can honestly say their product blew me away with its originality and its uniqueness. It really is good stuff folks and if you are after a really original feature in your home you should definitely check them out.

Here’s another example of what the company have done in the past. I assure you the photo don’t do the product justice:

So how am I going to shoehorn Tara’s gallery meme into all of this this? Well after visiting myfotowall.com I started thinking about what photos of my own I’d get made into wallpaper. After the obligatory geeky gut reaction photos of the Death Star or screenshots from Lord of the Rings, I started to flick through my photo albums.

How about this for a alcove in the bedroom :

Or this for the dining room:

Or maybe even this for the bathroom:

Oh, ok – so I’m pushing the boundaries of the rules of the Gallery here a little bit. But I just wanted to run with the cool kids for a while, is that such a crime?

This isn’t a paid post. This is a “Thank you” post for Littlesunflowers.com who recently made a very generous donation to Hadrian’s Walk.

Their fantastic contribution will be used by The Joseph Salmon Trust directly in their work supporting bereaved families who have lost a child.

Little Sunflowers is a family run online children’s clothing and gift store for kids up to about seven years old.

I asked Bev, who runs the shop, if there were any products she particularly wanted promoting and she said no. And so I had a poke around for myself to see if there was anything that caught my eye.

If I’m honest I was expecting the usual fair of beautiful designer dresses and stylish boys clothes. And to be fair there is a very impressive array of that sort of stuff in there. But this is a shop that caters for geeks too. Geeks that want to dress their kids in this:

In July of this year I will be walking the 84 mile long Hadrian’s Wall footpath. I am doing this in aid of The Joseph Salmon Trust, a charity that provides financial support to parents who have lost a child. This might be help with things like funeral costs for those struggling to afford them, or to allow the self employed to take time off in order to grieve.

Over the next nine days I will be showcasing the bloggers that will be hiking the trail with me.

Idaho Dad

Idaho Dad started his blog A Family Runs Through It way back in 2004. That’s some seriously old school blogging. I mean the internet wasn’t even invented until 2005! (or something like that. I forget).

He’s certainly been a visitor to this blog almost since the start, and has always been both an inspiration and a source of encouragement to me. He probably won’t remember this, but he once sent me an incredibly supportive email during the middle of my mid-blog crisis about having the confidence to expand the scope of topics here on All That comes With It, and as a result lead directly to me improving both the quality and the enjoyment I get from writing this blog.

It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that without Idaho Dad I’d probably have quit blogging by now. Wether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on your perception.

Idaho Dad’s also been incredibly supportive of the walk and has proved an invaluable sounding board to bounce ideas off. In fact it was a comment about how he’d have liked to come along on the last walk that sparked off the idea to post an open invite here on the blog.

Wow. Thanks man.

Over on his blog Idaho Dad posts about life, the universe, and everything; but mainly focusing on his kids, homeschooling, and great children’s music. He’s a good man, and one I can’t recommend getting to know highly enough. Even if he does have a dodgy beard

ImPerceptible

ImPerceptible from ImPerceptibility is another homeschooler. But like Idaho Dad she’s not one of those scary fundamentalist christian homeschoolers. She describes herself as an Educational Anarchist, and I’m sure that moniker fits very well.

Actually I’m not entirely sure if she is homeschooling or not at the moment. But even if she isn’t, the attitude is still there.

I must admit that I’m a little intimidated by ImPerceptible. She’s artistic, intelligent, funny, literate and a free thinker; and sometimes I wonder if that in real life I’ll be able to keep up. She’s like one of those really cool kids in school – not the ones that hang around in the “in-crowd”, but those that just seem incredibly comfortable and self assured in their own skin. To quote Douglas Adams “They really know where their towel is”.

It’s quite possible that I’ve completely misread her, and that she’s as much of a bundle of social awkwardness and insecurities as the rest of us. Or maybe not.

Still, even if she does turn out to be too cool for school (ha! see what i did there?), I’m still looking forward to meeting her and her husband when they fly over for the walk in July. Because in every contact I’ve had with her she’s come across as a warm and lovely individual.

My only criticism is that she doesn’t blog enough. The blogosphere needs more imperceptibility in it.

I’m not entirely sure how Clair and I first became aware of each other, but I suspect it was because we’re both readers of the rather excellent Becky’s T-blog (probably he finest British transvestite blog in the world. Who said blogging wasn’t diverse).

Clair is a comedy geek. A serious comedy geek. She has a passion for the Goodies and for I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue that puts my own fandom to shame. She’s also seen comedians live that I’d give my left arm to see (give my left arm to, but not travel down to London for apparently). She’s even seen Daniel Kitson who is on my all time wish list.

And of course she’s been one of the superstar DJs on my kids podcasts (and has also contributed to episode 2, which will air as soon as I get my arse in gear to put it together)

She also takes damn good photos.

Dad Who Writes

What can I say about Dad Who Writes that adequately sums up my feelings towards him? Ah yes, I know…

Dad Who Writes for President of the Internet!

Intelligent, knowledgeable, fascinating, cultured, and honest. What’s not to like about this man? Sure, some of his posts might go over my head on occasion (he blogs about Dante’s Inferno for gods sake. I blog about my top ten superheros), but he never fails in having something interesting to say.

I find him most interesting however when he talks about the anthropology of blogging, especially after the periodic storms in teacups that the community seems to go through at regular intervals. He is able to be simultaneously diplomatic, independent, insightful, and spot on the mark. Pretty impressive stuff.

He’s also a damn good photographer, although hasn’t posted anything like that up for a while (if at all now I come to think of it. I may have only seen his stuff on flickr). In fact so far every blogger I’ve featured here has an interest in photography. At this rate there is going to be a pretty impressive photo album of the walk.

But above all, Dad Who Writes comes across as an honest man writing about fatherhood. He doesn’t only report the sugary stuff, nor does he preach about the way he thinks others should do it. He just talks openly about the struggles of parenting that we all go through every day.

Arjan from Dutchnid

On my trip to Wisconsin last year I was talking to my friend Greg about the people who comment on the blog.

“That Arjan” he observed “comes across like a really nice guy”.

Never a truer word was said.

Arjan is our sole Dutch walker (unless you count Martin, who’s Irish really), and at 25 is the youngest member of Team Ocelot. He’s unfailingly warm, pleasant, enthusiastic, and supportive. And his English is a hell of a lot better than my Dutch.

Arjan blogs rather sporadically over at Dutchnid. He writes about a variety of stuff, Warhammer 40k, Dutch culture, photography, films, and his every day life. I’m always pleased when I see that he’s posted in my feedreader, and only wish he’d do so more often. His posts highlighting models he has painted always fascinate me. No mater what your opinion on the merits of wargaming, you can’t deny that painting this level of detail on a figure only a couple of inches high is anything but amazing:

Arjan’s blog is a window into another world, similar – but also very different to my own (Sinterklaas? what on earth is all that about then!?).

I’m pretty sure I first encountered Arjan over at Lee’s blog, although it was so long ago now I can’t really say for sure. Our friendship is a good example of how blogging can bring together disparate people who never would have met otherwise. I’m glad we did meet though, and I’m very much looking forward to doing so in person this July.

Cathrine from Some Vague Utopia

Cathrine wasn’t a blogger before signing up to Hadrian’s Walk – but she thought she may as well start one up seeing as though half the other walkers have one. You can now find her over at her wonderful blog Some Vague Utopia

If I remember rightly we first “met” in my comments section when she responded to one of my rant’s about misery memoirs.

There is another connection however. Both she and her fiance Richard are friends of Oli Walker, one of the original Dales Walkers. Still there is no reason to hold that against them, and I’m extremely pleased that both of them are coming on the walk. Especially as they have decided to arrange their own accommodation and food, thereby not acting as contributory factors to my impending nervous breakdown.

Considering she’s only just started, Catherine has managed to avoid all the pit traps of the novice blogger. She’s forgone all the tales of what she had for lunch at Debinhams cafe and painfuly dreary accounts of the dream she had last night, and gone straight in with interesting posts, wonderful prose, and beautiful photos.

The swine.

It’s All That Come’s With It‘s blogiversary today. Four years old, can you believe it. And still no signs of slowing down.

Well, ok, there might be some signs of slowing down. Like the fact I used to post daily and now it’s generally two or three times a week. Or that I’ve had all the ingredients for a new special kids podcast for a month now, yet I still haven’t got round to putting them all together.

But that’s not due to a lack of enthusiasm. I’m still as excited about blogging as I ever was. I just spread myself around a bit more these days, that’s all. Take the Midnight Movie Club for example – who knew that talking about popcorn movies from the 80′s and 90′s with a Aussie reprobate would be so much fun?

And then of course there’s this Hadrian’s Walk thing.

Five years ago my very good friends Neil and Rachael lost their three year old son, Joseph. He died of streptococcal pneumonia. There were no warning signs. He wasn’t ill when they put him to bed. But when they went to wake him up in the morning he was gone.

I can’t even bare to imagine how that feels.

<title="Joseph Salmon" img src="http://allthatcomeswithit.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Joseph.gif">
Joseph

Determined to grasp something positive out of such a tragedy, Neil and Rachael founded the Joseph Salmon Trust in their son’s name. If he wasn’t to be able to reach his full potential to leave his mark on the world, then they would do it for him.

The Trust provides financial support to parents who have lost a child. This may be to help with funeral costs, or to allow the self employed a break from work in order to come to terms with their grief. Bereaved families have enough to cope with without the added concern about where they will find the money to pay for a headstone, or pay the next electricity bill if they can’t face going to work.

The Trust deals with each family on a case by case basis, providing help to those who need it most. Families that the charity has helped include that of twelve year old Jordan, who died in a prank gone tragically wrong; and Ryan, a four year old boy brutally murdered as an act of revenge against his mother.

These are horrific, heartbreaking tales. But every single family that the trust helps has a similarly tragic story. There are no “it’s probably for the best”‘s when a child dies. No “they had a good innings”. Just heartbreak, despair, and a beautiful hope lost. There is nothing we can do to make things better. But we can do something to stop them getting worse.

Back in 2008 a group of eleven friends and I hiked 76 miles along the Dales Way footpath in aid of the Trust. We raised £6,000, gained a great sense of achievement, and had a fantastic time int he process. Back in June of last year I announced my intention to do it all again. But this time I asked if anyone who visited my blog wanted to come with me.

The response was staggering.

As it stands there will be over sixty people joining me on a 86 mile long walk of Hadrian’s Wall this July. People are coming from all over the world to walk the path and show their support for the Trust. We’ve got people from England, Scotland, Ireland, America and Holland. We’ve got paramedics, nurses, policemen, teachers, bankers, writers, editors, and stay-at-home parents. We’ve even got a university professor and an American superior court judge. And all this is through the power of a blog.

Now try telling me that you can’t use the internet to make real friends.

Not everyone who is coming on the walk is a blogger themselves. In fact the majority aren’t (although most are friends or family of those who are and are being dragged along for the ride). But over the coming few days I’d like to use my blog to showcase the bloggers who are coming with me. There isn’t one among them that I don’t admire as a writer and a human being, and sometimes I just like to show off about my friends.

If you would like to make a donation to the Joseph Salmon Trust you can do so on our Justgiving Page. All the charities running costs are paid for corporate sponsorship, and so every penny of your donation will go straight to the people who need it most.

I’ve been pretty busy on the net this past week and so thought that I’d point you in the direction of the various stuff I’ve been up to.

Our epic 84 mile walk along Hadrian’s Wall looms ever nearer (less than six months now). I’ve posted about it over on The Joseph Salmon Trust website:

During the fundraising for our Dales walk we got a great deal of support from the readers of my blog. In fact donations from the blog accounted for over a thousand pounds of our total raised. So when I started thinking about organising another walk I asked if any of my readers fancied coming along.

The response was incredible.

As it stands there will be over sixty people joining me on Hadrian’s Wall this July.

I’ve also posted a logistics update over on the Hadrian’s Walk blog:

Dates of the walk

Remember, we set off walking on Monday July 5th, 2010 and reach the end on Saturday July 10th, 2010. This means that you will have to book these dates off work. I am talking specifically to Oli here. Oli – you need to book those days off work. Do it now Oli. Go talk to your manager and do it now.

Fundraising

So far we’ve raised a little over £400 [actually now this stands at £569] , which isn’t bad going since we haven’t officially started fundraising yet. I’ve done this via a couple of plugs on my blog and also by agreeing to do a couple of PR companies pitches as long as they make a donation to the Trust.

The ultimate aim is to raise the equivalent of what the trust gives out in a year, about £20,000. it’s a lofty goal, but I honestly think it’s achievable. As the walk draws nearer (exactly six months away now in fact) it’s probably time we at least started thinking how we’re going to raise the cash. It would be really good to pool our collective brains on this one, so if anyone has any ideas or leads then please let me know and I’ll put together a post/email of collected ideas.

As you know the walk has a Justgiving page where people can donate online. Justgiving is by far the best way of gathering donations as it’s automated and the charity gets the cash straight away. Plus only legitimate charities can get listed on there, and so it acts as reassurance that we’re not just pocketing the cash.

Meanwhile over at the Midnight Movie Club Lee and I have been having our childhood memories shattered:

Dan:
Hey, hang on a minute! Has someone somehow secretly switched the beloved Cannonball Run of my youth with this huge great steaming turd?

Far from being the modern classic of my memory, the movie seems to be merely a long and rather pathetic excuse for a series of fairly unimpressive car stunts and poorly written comedy set pieces. Surely this can’t be right?

I’m almost scared to watch Smokey and the Bandit again now.

Lee:
I’m having trouble believing that they had a good enough reason to make a sequel. The first two films are really mashed together in my memories so I wonder if the second one was much better because frankly, this first one was awfully hard to get through.

It took me five attempts to watch this all through.

I’ve never seen Smokey and the Bandit, I don’t know if I want to now.

Dan
Smokey and the Bandit was much, much better than this film. At least I think it was. I’m beginning to think I can’t trust my memory anymore.

Someone please tell me Look Who’s Talking wasn’t a duff film too? or Jaws 4? Surely Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure can’t be anything other than a modern classic? Please! Someone!?

Lee
Caravan of Courage IS a modern classic. Actually now that I think about it, wasn’t it a semi Christmas movie or was that the other one?
I mean there were two Ewok films outside of Jedi wasn’t there? *Sigh* I would look that up if I cared enough :)

I was in the local paper on Thursday. It was an article about myself and a very lovely woman called Helen being appointed as new Trustee’s of the Joseph Salmon Trust.

The story focused on Helen more than myself, which is fine by me – I’m not sure I could cope with the celebrity anyway. I have enough trouble answering the fan mail I get from being featured on the letters page of Whizzer and Chips back in 1985 without adding to my fame further. Plus there is that infamous “I’m a very sweaty man” incident on Radio Leeds last year.

But what tickled me most was the photo (excuse the shoddy scan quality):

Is it me or do I look like some Hagrid like giant, too huge for mere page boundaries to contain? I’m surprised that on publication there wasn’t panic on the streets, with people fleeing their homes in fear of me crushing them with my gigantic feet.

You can see the full article on the Huddersfield Examiner’s webpage here. amd of course you can donate to the charity here.

So I’ve got a few more broadly charity related things to get out of the way, and then I’ll stop talking about it for a while I promise.

First of all, remember this guy?

It’s Lee Sergeant from Quit Your Day Job, the chap who’s growing a Magnum P.I. style mustache in order to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues.

I mentioned back in this post that we’d be popping in on him occasionally in order to see how he’s doing. So lets take a look.

Yea gods! He looks like a cut price Burt Reynolds! Quick…move on to the next one.

Arrrggg!!

Lee has pledged that for any further donations he receives he’ll dress up in even more costumes. I know he’s got an Iron Man helmet so fingers crossed he goes for that one as it covers his entire head.

——————–

The second thing I wanted to mention was that on Friday I was nominated and accepted as a legal trustee of The Joseph Salmon Trust. This basically means that I will serve on the governing body of the charity and share joint responsibility for it being solvent, well-run, and that it delivers the charitable outcomes for the benefit of the public.

It’s a big responsibility, and I’m deeply honoured to have been asked.

Just in case you’ve not been here before I should explain that The Joseph Salmon Trust is a charity set up by my friends Neil and Rachael in the memory of their son who died aged just three years old. The Trust supports parents who have lost a child by providing financial assistance to those who need it most. This may be to help with funeral costs or to allow the self employed a break from work while they come to terms with their loss. You can donate here (you didn’t think I’d let a post like this go by without plugging the donate button do you?).

——————–

And finally, the good folks over at Qtag (who very generously donated £100 to the Trust) have asked me to do one last thing for them.

Their sister site, clothes2order.com, are currently running a weekly “TweeShirts” competition where (UK based) people tweet them a message (@clothes2order) that they think would look good on a T-shirt. Every Friday afternoon they select a winner and print and deliver their t-shirt free of charge.

I’ve taken a look at the previous winners and I must admit I’m pretty convinced the people I follow could do a lot better.

For example, scrolling through my tweetdeck I found these these little nuggets from the last day or so:

@binarydad Would wish American followers a happy Thanksgiving, but they didn’t say a thing to me about St Swithin’s Day. So fuck ‘em.

@outnumberedisme My hands smell like Hot Dogs and Onions. Pretty sure that’s not gonna make my wife horny.

@tysdaddy My daughter said she wants “heat-vision” goggles for Christmas, because “you can see farts with them!”

@swhittle Sometimes I’m such an idiot I half expect them to redraw the whole IQ curve.

@downwithpants Seriously lady, if you smoke a ton of perfume will not cover it up. You just smell like a nicotine flower that bloomed all over my office.

@djkirkby ‘Bajamawammers’ is now my new favourite word of all time.

@singleparentdad It is true I do like to handle the massive ones, at any given opportunity.

The contest currently seems rather under-subscribed (just type @clothes2order into the twitter search box to see other entries), so anyone entering has a pretty good chance of getting a free T-shirt out of it.

Of course if @big_ben_clock entered they’d win every single time.

Our 84 mile sponsored walk of Hadrian’s wall is looming ever closer. Seven months and twelve days close to be precise.

I’ve started to cast my net around for some corporate sponsorship and the wonderful people at Qtag.com have been the first to step up to the plate with an extremely generous donation of £100. Thanks especially go to Simon Turner from their marketing department who set it all up. You are a gent sir.

Qtag sell wholesale clothing to the general public. By way of thanks for the donation I asked Simon if there was any way to promote his company on the blog. He very kindly sent me a set of Berol fabric crayons and a couple of T-shirts for me to take a look at and review, with the understanding that I’d be 100% honest in my appraisal.

Fortunately we all loved them. It would have been rather awkward if we hadn’t.

The crayons were bright, fun, and easy to use. But best of all they were clean. We’ve used fabric paint on T-shirts before and I’ve always needed to lay down protective sheeting worthy of a microchip factory. But with these crayons you just draw them on the fabric , iron it, and you’re done. Marvellous.

Amy loved making the T-shirts. In fact she was pestering me to do it from the moment the package from Qtag arrived. It must be something about being given permission to draw on previously forbidden canvases. If someone invented special Wallpaper Crayons I’m sure they’d make a fortune.

Here’s a photo of Amy modeling her new bespoke T-shirt:

The crayons are also cheap. Very cheap. Including VAT the crayons come to a total of £4.11. When you add to that the fact Qtag sell blank white kids T-Shirt for just £1.09 (or if you’re feeling posher a Fruit of the Loom one for £2.75), then you’ve got yourself a pretty good stocking filler.

What’s more, if you buy in bulk (10 or more) you get it even cheaper. Kerry and I are seriously considering getting a small stockpile together for the relentless onslaught of birthday parties we go to throughout the year. That way we get to be the smug parents who give the cool creative presents rather than the ones who obviously rely solely on 3 for 2 offers at Boots.

You can buy the fabric crayons here, and the kids T-shirts here.

The rest of the Qtag website is also pretty impressive price wise – adult Fruit of the Loom T-shirts for £2.30, cotton polo shirts for £3.69. However it’s all pretty plain and simple stuff. You’re not going to find any Fred West or Matthew Perry labels here (or should that be Fred Perry and Matthew West? I get confused). But for the fashion phobic such as myself it’s a good place to stock up on the essentials. It’s also pretty good for getting those plain polo shirts for kids school uniforms (£3.20 to you squire).

And if you’re looking to buy any sort of uniform for a team event (like a group walk along Hadrian’s Wall for example) it’s a great place to go. As is their sister site, clothes2order.com where you can get stuff printed with logos too.

————————————

Disclaimer. As Qtag gave us a donation towards the Joseph Salmon Trust I suppose you could argue that this is a paid post. My review was honest and I’ve also personally donated the equivalent cost of the crayons and T-shirts to the Trust as well. Donation or not, I wouldn’t be recommending Qtag unless I believed in what they are peddling. My only reservation is that I imagine the majority of their goods are made overseas by exploited workers; but lets face it, you’d find it very difficult to find any item of clothing in the shops on the high street that isn’t.

Oh, and I made up the designer “Matthew West” for the purposes of that crappy joke. Sorry
