In July of this year I will be walking the 84 mile long Hadrian’s Wall footpath. I am doing this in aid of The Joseph Salmon Trust, a charity that provides financial support to parents who have lost a child. This might be help with things like funeral costs for those struggling to afford them, or to allow the self employed to take time off in order to grieve.

Over the next nine days I will be showcasing the bloggers that will be hiking the trail with me.

Ed

Ed over at Little m Long a is a fellow nurse, although he gave all that stuff up a few years ago to concentrate on being a full time stay-at-home dad. To say I’m jealous would be an understatement. Saying that however I’m not sure I could cope with everything Ed does. He’s got five kids. Yes five. And the two youngest are twins.

How he has time to blog astounds me.

Ed used to write over at the blog Zoë’s Dad, but recently he’s shifted camps and set up home at Little m Long a (a reference to how you pronounce his last name). He was always a great blogger, but since moving he’s become even better. He has a lyrical and poetic flavour to his writing which is a joy to read.

Ed is one of the cornerstones of the little blogging community that I feel part of, and the fact he’s coming over all the way from America to join the walk is extremely exciting. And I know that his participation has been one of the things that’s spurred a few others to join too.

Looking forward to meeting you Ed. Even if you do have rather dubious tastes in tie-dyed t-shirts

Erin

Erin from the blog The Fierce Beagle asked me to point out that she will be the second youngest person coming on the walk after Arjan. And that’s true. She is the second youngest, even if she doesn’t look it.

I’ve already waxed lyrical about how much I like Erin’s blog, so I don’t want to swell her head any more with my praise. I will just say The Fierce Beagle is a fantastic read and you really should have her in your blogroll.

Oh, and her site is one of the most nicely designed I’ve come across. I especially like the sparkly header.

Erin’s another one who’s coming over from America to join the walk. She’s even dragging her husband Noah with her, which is rather cool as he sounds like just my sort of guy (a geek). He’s a police officer too, just like T J Hooker. Very exciting.

I am trying very hard to resist making jokes about nightsticks, so I think I should probably leave it there.

Over the next nine posts I will be showcasing the bloggers that will be hiking the trail with me.

Clair

Clair writes over at Moon in the Gutter, and before that she blogged at Sad Sweet Songs. And if you can show me two better names for blogs than that then I’d like to see them.

I’m not entirely sure how Clair and I first became aware of each other, but I suspect it was because we’re both readers of the rather excellent Becky’s T-blog (probably he finest British transvestite blog in the world. Who said blogging wasn’t diverse).

Clair is a comedy geek. A serious comedy geek. She has a passion for the Goodies and for I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue that puts my own fandom to shame. She’s also seen comedians live that I’d give my left arm to see (give my left arm to, but not travel down to London for apparently). She’s even seen Daniel Kitson who is on my all time wish list.

And of course she’s been one of the superstar DJs on my kids podcasts (and has also contributed to episode 2, which will air as soon as I get my arse in gear to put it together)

She also takes damn good photos.

Dad Who Writes

What can I say about Dad Who Writes that adequately sums up my feelings towards him? Ah yes, I know…

Dad Who Writes for President of the Internet!

Intelligent, knowledgeable, fascinating, cultured, and honest. What’s not to like about this man? Sure, some of his posts might go over my head on occasion (he blogs about Dante’s Inferno for gods sake. I blog about my top ten superheros), but he never fails in having something interesting to say.

I find him most interesting however when he talks about the anthropology of blogging, especially after the periodic storms in teacups that the community seems to go through at regular intervals. He is able to be simultaneously diplomatic, independent, insightful, and spot on the mark. Pretty impressive stuff.

He’s also a damn good photographer, although hasn’t posted anything like that up for a while (if at all now I come to think of it. I may have only seen his stuff on flickr). In fact so far every blogger I’ve featured here has an interest in photography. At this rate there is going to be a pretty impressive photo album of the walk.

But above all, Dad Who Writes comes across as an honest man writing about fatherhood. He doesn’t only report the sugary stuff, nor does he preach about the way he thinks others should do it. He just talks openly about the struggles of parenting that we all go through every day.

It’s All That Come’s With It‘s blogiversary today. Four years old, can you believe it. And still no signs of slowing down.

Well, ok, there might be some signs of slowing down. Like the fact I used to post daily and now it’s generally two or three times a week. Or that I’ve had all the ingredients for a new special kids podcast for a month now, yet I still haven’t got round to putting them all together.

But that’s not due to a lack of enthusiasm. I’m still as excited about blogging as I ever was. I just spread myself around a bit more these days, that’s all. Take the Midnight Movie Club for example – who knew that talking about popcorn movies from the 80′s and 90′s with a Aussie reprobate would be so much fun?

And then of course there’s this Hadrian’s Walk thing.

Five years ago my very good friends Neil and Rachael lost their three year old son, Joseph. He died of streptococcal pneumonia. There were no warning signs. He wasn’t ill when they put him to bed. But when they went to wake him up in the morning he was gone.

I can’t even bare to imagine how that feels.

<title="Joseph Salmon" img src="http://allthatcomeswithit.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Joseph.gif">
Joseph

Determined to grasp something positive out of such a tragedy, Neil and Rachael founded the Joseph Salmon Trust in their son’s name. If he wasn’t to be able to reach his full potential to leave his mark on the world, then they would do it for him.

The Trust provides financial support to parents who have lost a child. This may be to help with funeral costs, or to allow the self employed a break from work in order to come to terms with their grief. Bereaved families have enough to cope with without the added concern about where they will find the money to pay for a headstone, or pay the next electricity bill if they can’t face going to work.

The Trust deals with each family on a case by case basis, providing help to those who need it most. Families that the charity has helped include that of twelve year old Jordan, who died in a prank gone tragically wrong; and Ryan, a four year old boy brutally murdered as an act of revenge against his mother.

These are horrific, heartbreaking tales. But every single family that the trust helps has a similarly tragic story. There are no “it’s probably for the best”‘s when a child dies. No “they had a good innings”. Just heartbreak, despair, and a beautiful hope lost. There is nothing we can do to make things better. But we can do something to stop them getting worse.

Back in 2008 a group of eleven friends and I hiked 76 miles along the Dales Way footpath in aid of the Trust. We raised £6,000, gained a great sense of achievement, and had a fantastic time int he process. Back in June of last year I announced my intention to do it all again. But this time I asked if anyone who visited my blog wanted to come with me.

The response was staggering.

As it stands there will be over sixty people joining me on a 86 mile long walk of Hadrian’s Wall this July. People are coming from all over the world to walk the path and show their support for the Trust. We’ve got people from England, Scotland, Ireland, America and Holland. We’ve got paramedics, nurses, policemen, teachers, bankers, writers, editors, and stay-at-home parents. We’ve even got a university professor and an American superior court judge. And all this is through the power of a blog.

Now try telling me that you can’t use the internet to make real friends.

Not everyone who is coming on the walk is a blogger themselves. In fact the majority aren’t (although most are friends or family of those who are and are being dragged along for the ride). But over the coming few days I’d like to use my blog to showcase the bloggers who are coming with me. There isn’t one among them that I don’t admire as a writer and a human being, and sometimes I just like to show off about my friends.

If you would like to make a donation to the Joseph Salmon Trust you can do so on our Justgiving Page. All the charities running costs are paid for corporate sponsorship, and so every penny of your donation will go straight to the people who need it most.

<title="Joseph Salmon" img src="http://allthatcomeswithit.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Joseph.gif">

Our house very much resembles a clown car – in that it looks functional and orderly on the surface, but it doesn’t take very long until things start falling off and bursting into flame at comedically inconvenient moments. Take the death of my Xbox on Boxing Day as a prime example.

The task of keeping up with the repairs is almost Herculean in it’s magnitude. As soon as one finger is stuck in the dam, seven more leaks spring up elsewhere. Consequently we’ve ended up becoming rather defeatist in our attitude to home maintenance. Accepting with an almost Russian stoicism that half the plug sockets don’t work and that the shower switches from hot to cold the back again at seemingly random intervals.

Sometimes we are able to snatch the occasional victory from the inevitable march of decay however. Today, for example, I managed to replace the broken screen on my MacBook. I did this single handedly, with only an internet guide for assistance. Not only that, but i also managed to upgrade my hard-drive at the same time. Instead of the measly 60GB I had previously, I’ve now got 320GB purring under the bonnet. Rock and roll baby, rock and roll.

Of course it will all probably explode in a deadly fireball by this time tomorrow. But for now I have a laptop that I can actually use on my lap. And that means only one thing: I can once more engage in my favourite activity of all time – blogging from the toilet.

Look here’s a photo to prove it:

Unfortunately the lights in the bathroom haven’t worked since the beginning of summer, so you’re just going have to take my word that I’m writing this from the bog.

But If people really insist they need proof I suppose I could always re-take it tomorrow in daylight. I’ve been eating a lot of eggs recently so I’ll probably be publishing quite a lengthy post tomorrow, and so can easily tack it on the end.

Speaking of which: If you haven’t checked out the Midnight Movie Club recently then head on over as this week we’re discussing the ultimate 80′s classic Back to the Future. And if you haven’t already, you can download the historic (ahem) first episode of our podcast – The Breakfast Bar. It’s all good stuff (providing your expectations are low enough of course).

This is sort of a response to a recent post over at A Modern Mother called The Sate of British Mummy Blogging 2009 and predictions for 2010. It shouldn’t be interpreted as an attack however. Just an alternative point of view. And I promise I’m not sulking just because she said “Mummy and not “Parent”. This also isn’t a judgment about how anyone else chooses to write their blog.

Despite that caveat however I suspect that I’m still going to get jumped on and shouted at, but here goes:

There is currently a lot of hype in the UK parent blogger scene surrounding the growing influence and power of bloggers. People are pointing to the vultures circling print media and citing it as evidence that blogging will lead the way in the new world order. That blogs will become as widely read as newspapers and will be the new source of information in the internet age.

Which lets face it, is bollocks.

Ultimately blog audiences are very small. I, for example, am currently placed at number ten on the Tots 100 index, so theoretically I am the tenth most read and influential UK parent blogger. Last month I was even at number 4. Yet according to my statcounter the average number of unique hits I get a day is 88. Feedburner says that I have just over 200 subscribers. These aren’t statistics that are going to have The Sunday Times quivering in its boots.

Blogging is dying if anything. Maybe not the UK parenting blogs, but certainly in general. Twitter has killed, or at least seriously injured, a number of great blogs, from Raging Dad to Mere Bagatell, and I’m sure it will kill many more. And when people get bored of twitter, they will move onto the next thing – just like they have left blogging.

I may well be one of them. I may well abandon this blog and become a hardcore user of Flingding, or Beepaboop, or whatever social media trend is round the next corner. Don’t get me wrong, I love blogging and for the moment I’m happy enough pottering about in the blogosphere, blathering away about whatever happens to catch my fancy. The world of blogging is still very exciting to me, and still has a multitude of wonderful possibilities (take my brand new blog Lee and Dan’s Midnight Movie Club for example. *plug plug*). But I’m not naive enough to think I’ll still be doing this thirty years from now – I’ll be far too busy playing on my hover-board and eating my dinner in tablet form for that sort of stuff.

I can’t help feeling that all this hype is just an enormous artificially inflated bubble. That the reality is that the only people reading blogs are the other bloggers. There may be over 800 members of the British Mummy Bloggers Network, and those bloggers may all have 200 subscribers each. But that does not translate into 160,000 readers because all of these people are simply reading each other. Lets face it, Bloggers aren’t going to be impressed by your positive review of the new clothing range at NEXT, because just last week they got offered the same £25 voucher to review it too.

Just as a way of an experiment, if you are reading this and don’t have a blog of your own raise your hand to be counted in the comments section. I will be very interested to see the ratio of non-bloggers reading this, but I suspect it will be under 20%.

As you may know, this spring Think Parents gave me a blu-ray player and a bunch of Disney disks to review. And every month or so they send a few more for me to take a look at. There is no way on earth that my reviews have made Disney back the money they have spent on me. No possible way. Even Dad Who Writes’ excellent UNISON metaphor post doesn’t convince me (as a quick aside: that UNISON post is also very relevant to an discussion Tysdaddy and I were having over on his blog. I’ve said it before, but I nominate Dad Who Writes for International President of the Internet)

So my prediction for 2009 is that this whole PR explosion and blogging hype is going to die a death, and the medium will return to the grass roots sub-culture from which it emerged (albeit with significantly increased numbers). Companies will realize that they could reach an equivalently sized audience if they set up a small stall outside the Packhorse shopping centre in Huddersfield, and then begin to wonder why they are bothering. I’m not saying that it’s a good thing, and I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing. And I know I’m certainly going to take advantage of it while it’s still here. I’ve abused my position on the Tot’s 100 to pries £190 out of PRs in aid of The Joseph Salmon Trust this month alone, and what’s more have managed to maintain a feeling of integrity – hurrah!

But this blogging is bigger than jesus thing is a bubble; and bubbles tend to burst.

Just as humans evolved from apes, blogging evolved from lists of links. And while it’s nice to have speech, art, and tools at our disposal; sometimes it’d be fun to shed all our clothes and swing about in the trees for a while.

There’s been something missing from my feed reader for quite a while now (since July of this year in fact). And that something is NYC Watchdog’s Sunday Smorgashboard. While there’s no way on earth I’d want to take up such a mighty mantle, I do think that there is value in pointing out things that you’ve enjoyed from within the blogosphere once in a while. People don’t link to each other enough any more in my opinion.

First up is Heather from Notes From Lapland who has made my blog reading about 300% less frustrating with her post 5 tips to make blog reading, commenting, subscribing faster and easier. Primarily by pointing out how to deal with reading truncated blog feeds while remaining within Google Reader:

Read and comment on blogs without leaving Google Reader – comment shows up on blog.

With the FireFox extension Better G-Reader this is now possible.

Add Better G-Reader FireFox add-on.

Re-start FireFox

The add-on pop up box will appear when you re-start. Click on the Better G-Reader add-on and click options.

Under the general tab click on the ‘preview item (click button or headline)’ box, click OK and exit (the ‘preview item automatically’ option doesn’t work for me)

Open Google Reader and click either on the little blue arrow next to post title or on the ‘preview’ button at the bottom of the post.

The blog will now open inside google reader. You can read and comment as if you were on the actual blog and your comments will show up on the blog as if you were too!

This is especially exciting to me as my new blog project (Lee and Dan’s Midnight Movie Club, opening this Wednesday) is going to have to have a truncated feed due to the unique way it’s formatted, and I’ve been feeling very guilty about it.

Andrew Collins (writer, 6 Music DJ, and co-host of my current favourite podcast) wrote a marvellous rant about the campaign to make Rage Against The Machine Christmas number one rather than the X-factor:

Others on Twitter seem to think that Simon Cowell’s “empire” needs “toppling.” Why not Google’s empire? Or Amazon’s empire? Or Microsoft’s empire? Maybe they think those empires need toppling too. I suspect not. Because those empires provide things that people on the left approve of, whereas manufactured pop music – eek! – is for idiots and plebs, who are too stupid to know how bad the music they like is, and the choices they make on iTunes or in HMV are in some way inferior to the choices made by Rage Against The Machine fans. (By the way, the #ratm4xmas campaign seems to have little to do with Rage Against The Machine, and plenty to do with the fact that the song has “fuck” in it, which isn’t magically going to be played on Radio 1 or the Christmas Top Of The Pops anyway.)

Mrs W from Clinically Fed Up has some very interesting insights into the nature of grief:

When you’re 19 you also think that these things always happen at Christmas. At Christmas there’s always a house fire that wipes out a family, a new born baby found abandoned, a car crash. It’s only with the benefit of years that you realise these things happen all year round. They are, however, highlighted at Christmas, aggravated by their incongruous setting at this happiest of times. When we are so full of goodwill and joy it’s just worse. Which is why my tummy flipped and my heart grew heavy when I read a report on the BBC website on Saturday and I mourned the tragic passing of three strangers in a car accident in the Highlands. A mother and her two sons, here one day and just gone the next. Like that.

Only it turned out they weren’t strangers.

I’m, not sure if I’ll be doing this kind of thing again, but I better make a sort of standard disclaimer: just because you are not listed here doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy your post or don’t think it’s as good as or better than the ones I have mentioned. it just means that I didn’t list you this time, that’s all.

I read two types of blogs. The first type are blogs written by people that I like. These are bloggers with whom I feel I have developed (or am developing) a relationship. I am interested in what they say and the way that they say it. They comment on my blog, I comment on theirs. I tease them and call them names, and they tease me and call me names back. I read their stories about every day life with genuine interest and pleasure. And when I say “Congratulations!” or “You’re in my thoughts” I really mean it. They are my friends and are what keep me coming back to the blogosphere

Then they are the other types of blogs. These are the ones that are so well written and so funny they wouldn’t be out of place in a weekly newspaper column. Due to the quality of what these bloggers churn out they often (but not always) have hundreds of readers and commenters, and so the personal relationship between reader and writer is heavily watered down. There’s a very good chance that this person doesn’t even know who you are, that you’re just another face in the crowd. But that’s OK, the writing is so good that you’re happy to consider yourself a fan rather than a friend.

I suppose the difference between the two categories is similar to the one between a bunch of really clever and funny friends in the pub and watching Stephen Fry on the TV. If you had to chose between the two you’d go for your mates without hesitation because they give you so much more than simply entertainment. But it’s nice to have the facility to just sit back and watch a master at work now and again.

But there are a few bloggers that span both categories. People with whom I’ve developed a friendship, but that have the potential to become superstar bloggers if they put their mind to it. There isn’t a single blog in my google reader that isn’t written by a talented blogger (I tend to have high standards), but these people are beyond the pale. If they don’t produce at least one book in their lifetime then it will be a waste. Greg, Whit, Xbox – these are just three of fantastic and honest writers about whom my boundaries between friendship and fandom is deliciously blurred. And I have gushed sycophantically about them on previous posts.

And I would like to add Erin from Fierce Beagle to that list.

Blimey Erin’s good. I mean really good. For example today she did one of those “This is what my child is doing developmentally” posts. You know the kind – Dooce does them every month (or did back when I used to read her anyhow). But somehow Erin managed to make her development posts both interesting and funny. This is very hard to do, I know because I’ve tried and failed myself.

Just read this:

“And he’s very good at impersonations. For instance he can wag his finger and Shhh! at Cody in such a way that people can barely tell the difference between him and me, a differentiation that is further complicated by the fact that he frequently wears my slippers.”

That, ladies and gentlemen, is subtle comedy genius at it’s best. Not for Erin is the big, obvious, signposted gags. This woman is a crafstman.

In her day job Erin’s an editor, which goes some way to explaining her writing chops (although as far as I can make out all that editing involves is tipexing out spelling mistakes). She’s also the wife of Noah, a police officer, and writes extremely eloquently about the anxieties that having a husband on the thin blue line can provoke.

In short – go add her to your feedreader now. You won’t regret it.

Like many bloggers I have an on-the-go list to record potential post ideas for future use. I’m not convinced that this adds anything to the quality of what I spew out here, but it does sometimes give me something to write about when otherwise my mind is blank.

Here’s a small extract from my list that hints at what you lucky people might be reading here at All That Comes With It over the next few weeks. Warning, contains spoilers:

Hate having to pay for ketchup

Pictures of muddy boots

Dinner vs Lunch

Pretty thrilling stuff eh? Perhaps this blog should come with caveat that it shouldn’t be read by pregnant women and people with heart conditions.

But this list doesn’t always steer me right however. I was flicking through it this evening trying to figure out if I had the energy to post when I noticed a couple of entries I made after waking up at 3am this morning.

New word: Tonither

Play on words on Obi-Wan Kenobi: Oh bee? One ken no bee! – work out joke with this as punchline.

It seems that 3am is not my most creative time of the day. Or my most lucid.

Still, after contemplating them for a while I was able to add another idea to my list:

Lazy post about crap post ideas

Job done.

In a conversation in the comments section yesterday Insomniac Mummy inspired me to start up a sort of “Things I Have Got Out of Blogging” series of posts. So here we go.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to make a number of really good friends through this blog. And many of these friendships have transcended their “virtual” boundaries and grown to be as solid and as real as any I’ve developed through traditional means.

All my blogging friends are incredibly important to me, and my life is enriched by them immeasurably. But my friendship with a chap called Greg has a particular importance to me.

You probably don’t know Greg. If you do it’s probably only because you’ve read one of my sycophantic posts about him. These days he rarely engages with the blogging world, either in comments or over on his own blog. But nearly four years ago when I first dipped my toes into blogging, he was my mentor. His was the first blog I ever read, and his were the first comments I ever received. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be doing this, and so I am truly grateful.

He also bought me my first ukulele, and therefore has incured the wrath of my entire family.

He also happens to be the funniest writer on the whole internet. His is the only blog that I’ve gone back through the entire archives and read every single post ever written. Twice. And I ended up in tears of laughter both times. And there’s a fair few posts to get through too – this guy was one of the pioneers and his first entries date back to 1999.

Unfortunately Greg’s just about given up on blogging over the past couple of years, and the internet is a far poorer place for his absence. I keep trying to persuade him to start up a joint blogging venture with me. I’d happily mothball All That Comes With It for the chance to collaborate in a trans-atlantic “Tales of Two Families” type site. But he just smiles at me, mutters various polite platitudes, and then changes the subject. Damn his eyes.

We’ve flown over to the states to visit Greg (and his fantastic wife Deb and their two kids) twice. Once in 2007 and once earlier this year. Those two visits have been amongst the best holidays I’ve had in my life – and considering that they live in deepest darkest Wisconsin that’s really saying something for their prowess as hosts. They also came over here to visit us too. Despite the distance between us, he and his family are among the Hughes’ most valued friends.

In short, I like the guy and I like his family.

I’ll stop now as I’m probably pissing him off. However in order to illustrate the man’s comedy genius I thought I’d repost a video he did for me.

Just as a quick explanation: A couple of years ago a younger, fatter, me attempted to start my own meme based around pretending to be an orangutan. Here are the rules, followed by my own video:

The Every Which Way but Loose Meme.

The rules:
1. You are auditioning to be in the latest orangutan related comedy blockbuster: Dunston Checks In II: Return of the feces flinger.
2. The Screen Actors Guild restrict non-human primates to only three facial expressions in order that they are not used as cheap substitutes for actors such as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Rosanne Barr. These are: The Raspberry, the Head Shake, and the Face Slap.

3. Create an audition video exhibiting your talent in these three areas.
4. Try and persuade some other idiots to do it too

—————————

Now here’s Greg’s response. To quote The Holmes in the comments section of the original post: “His timing is…it’s awesome.”

I’m sorry Greg. I know you’d have rather I hadn’t posted this. But what can I say, I like to sing your praises.
