Just like David Hasselhoff, I’m huge in Germany

I don’t know if anyone has had the opportunity to pick up the latest edition of the German magazine Grundschule Englisch yet. I know that in our local newsagents it must really sell out fast as they never seem to have a copy.

It’s a quarterly magazine aimed at teachers in Germany who teach English. This quarters theme is British Festivals, and as well as the usual suspects of bonfire night, Pancake day, and St Valentine’s Day they have chosen to fine tune their focus right down to a celebration that takes place in a little village just South of Huddersfield: Slaithwaite’s Moonraking Festival

And why the hell shouldn’t they, that’s what I say. After all, Slaithwaite is the home to three of the countries most celebrated Bloggers. There’s Rol who’s site once made the Mail on Sunday’s Blog-of-the-week, me who once got quoted on the BBC Webpage alongside proper journalists from the Guardian and the Independent, and Kerry who once got mentioned on the universally acclaimed super-blog All That Comes With It. Is it little wonder that Slaithwate is widely considered to be the blogging capital of Europe.

The magazine itself is in German, and consequently I have no idea what it says. The picture accompanying it on the other hand are absolutely stunning. Whoever took it must have been some sort of photographic genius to produce such fantastic images in such low light levels. I bet they are devastatingly handsome and incredibly intelligent too. I mean, just look at it:

Hang on a minute; that photo looks strangely familiar. Oh yes, I remember now; I took it!

It’s true. I am that mysterious handsome and intelligent photographic genius. Thanks to the creative commons license and Flickr’s evident dearth of half decent photos of last year’s Moonraking, I have now become a published photographer. Hurrah!

A couple of months ago a very pleasant member of the Grundschule Englisch editorial team wrote to me and asked if they could use my photos in their magazine. I said yes of course, and this morning a complimentary copy of the finished product came through my letterbox. How exciting.

If you take a lot of photos and have them on Flickr then I thoroughly recomend placing them under the creative commons license. Not only is it sharing the love, but you also get to see your photos used by other people. As well as my adventures into German teaching my work can also be seen on a PR site promoting rhubarb chutney, on the Schmap’s iPhone guide to the Royal Armories, and on a weird hippy site talking about ying, yang, and your bladder. Someone asked me the other day about including my moonraking photos in a local tourist guide too, so we’ll see if that comes to anything.

Of course I’m not being paid for any of this, but considering the amount of stuff I filch from the internet I think it’s only fair I put something back. It’s punk rock man, punk rock.

    That’s outstanding. Congratulations!

People keep asking to publish my testicle photos in a magazine called “Bear Quarterly”, but I have to politely decline.

Congratulations (on being devastatingly handsome). (okay, and on being recognized by the German people). (Cool picture. Those Germans sure know what they’re doing). (It took them a few years).

    That’s very cool.

I’ve had a few Flickr photos used as well. One of them was at a local ski area, taken during the summer. They wanted to use it “inside their magazine.” I agreed, in exchange for a couple of free tickets to ride their gondola. Turns out they used the photo as the center of a massive marketing campaign, on brochures, posters, billboards, maybe even t-shirts for all I know. I complained about it and received a $200 voucher to stay in their new lodge/indoor water park. Sometimes you just have to hold out for the big bucks. :)

Avitable – That’s strange, I could have sworn I saw you in September’s issue.

People in the Sun – (thanks)

Phil – Your photography has always been excellent. The sooner you splurge on a DSLR the better, you could always pay for it by doing a few weddings like Kerry did.

German isn’t my native language but it should be ‘danke’ as far as I know :)
Hmm maybe there’s a magazine for teachers who teach German in England. Still very very cool.

Arjan – I knew I should have looked it up. As I assume English isn’t your native language either I am as always in awe of your language skills.

They do teach German in schools here, but i gave it up at 14 because I was Scheiße at it.

nope mine’s just Dutch..but well there are just roughly 20 million Dutch speakers worldwide..with most of them overhere. English and German are obligatory for almost everyone up to around 16 yrs at least. And as no one wants to learn Dutch…

I’m in awe of your blogging skills..I forgot a long time ago how to make that ‘ringel s’.

While it is true that the paper lantern photo is awesome, I’m equally impressed by the thought of Pancake Day. Dude, I would SO sign up for that.

apathy lounge – Perhaps I should point out that you would call our pancakes crepes. Still a damn fine festival though.

Rol – I’ve heard Mr Bragg is extremely disappointed in you.

Penelope – To be honest I’m not even sure how you got past the doorman.
