I am on a diet. In fact I’ve been on a diet for about eight weeks. In total I’ve lost around 25lb, which isn’t too bad at all. I still have a long way to go though, another 55lb or so.
I don’t know why I have been reluctant to blog about me trying to lose weight. It’s probably something to do with being embarrassed at how fat I am. I weighed myself on the morning we set off on the walk and I came in at 22 stone (that’s 308lb). As people point out to me when I tell them this, I don’t look that heavy, but trust me, I am. Or at least I was.
I got on the scales the day after finishing the walk and I found I’d lost 8lb. It appears exercise has some kind of effect on how heavy you are. Who knew?!
I figured that it was a good a time as any to try and keep the momentum going. Especially seeing as though I’d scared myself a couple of months ago when I got pains in my chest. I knew it was just heartburn, but it got me thinking: what do I love more; my children or pork pies? It was a close call, especially around bed time, but I eventually came down on the side of trying not to die before I’m 40.
So now I’m on a diet.
Kerry is too, although I’m too much of a gentleman to disclose what she weighs (hint: it’s less than 700lb). We’re both doing the Slimming World diet. Kerry attends the meetings and buys the books, while I steal them off her and don’t have to pay anything. It’s the perfect arrangement.
I’ve been rather impressed by it so far. I’ve had a go at Weight Watchers in the past but ended up on it because I got tired of counting points all the time. With Slimming World you just get a big list of things you are allowed to eat and then are given full permission to stuff your face with as much of it that your stomach can hold. It’s good stuff as it’s obviously working and I rarely feel hungry.
One side effect of it is that I am cooking a lot more. And by cooking I mean actually using raw ingredients rather than simply pushing buttons on the microwave. This week I’ve made indonesian stir fry curry, bean and barley chili stew, and quorn jambalaya. I stink of garlic, the dishwasher is on almost all the time, and I’m farting for England, but I’m slowly getting slimmer and that’s the main thing.
I’ve been tempted to do a Wednesday weight loss video a la PG but I don’t have a video camera. I used to have one, but Neil made me give it back so he could raffle it off for some bloody charity. Selfish bastard.
Still, I might mention my efforts here now and again. Just to try an keep my motivation going if nothing else.

Aye, Slimming World is good when you stick to it, and it isn’t that hard to do but Si and I have fallen of the wagon a bit recently (ok for the last 11 months) we need to get back to the healthy ways of Slimming World.
I need your recipe for bean and barley chilli stew it sounds like it could be delish.
PS
Do you like Scan Bran – I’m sure it’s the dwarf bread of the dieting community

That’s bloody good going Dan.
I too found that I’d lost some weight after the walk (I would put it down to bits of my feet falling off, but seeing as I was the only one who DIDN’T get blisters….)
I think I’d dropped about half a stone (that’s 7 pounds to your U.S. readers, or 7lb to those who prefer the ‘old money’, or 3.175kg to people who think they’re cleverer than us (but still have to use base10)) after the walk, and I’m close to reaching that BMI target that everyone keeps harping on about.
When I say ‘reach the target’, I mean “get close to the top end of that scale”.
Apparently, everyone should have a 36″ waistline (or less). I used to have one of those, but I’m sure the clothing manufacturers have changed their measuring tapes. Maybe THEY’RE the ones who can’t fully understand the converstion from imperial to metric.
Imperial – that’s got me thinking. Perhaps our friends overseas insist on using such measurements because they still want to be part of our Empire? How sweet.
Woo Hoo welcome to the club fat boy!
I too have a little surplus as you know from previous blogs but I’m feeling rather smug because I lost 2.5 pounds last week.
I like WW as I know where I am with points especially as I tend to pick – what with my hectic lifestyle and all. So I can have something and then make up for it later. It’s all very organised!!
Anyhow, good luck to both of you, avoid the pork pies at all cost, but did you know that if you eat something off someone elses plate it doesn’t count?

I’m also one of these ‘you don’t look THAT heavy’ fellas.
I’ve stagnated a lot the last 10 months or so, and the time has come to do something about it.
Well done on 25lbs, thats bloody serious stuff….and 55 more? yikes.

I’m not having weight problems yet..but I guess eating better when I get older wouldn’t hurt…I bet my body will sometime start to protest against all the junk I stuff inside.
I salute you that without our ‘pressure’ you have already lost a lot of weight, that’s maybe even better. Now keep it up..or down…or something.

Jane – I’m just doing green days as Kerry is vegetarian and it’s just easier that way. Ill find the bean and barley chili stew recipe, but basically it’s make bean and barley stew, and then put chili in it.
Oh and I googled Scran Bran and the first thing that came up was a forum post by you!
Oli – I remember the days of a 36″ waistline. Now my thigh is approaching 36″.
Gail – Does that include the dog’s dish too?
Xbox – Thanks, the 25lb came off relatively easily. I have a feeling the 55lb wont though.
Arjan – “when I get older”? Why you cheeky young whipper snapper.
nice! yeah, vid or not keep the updates coming. the self imposed pressure of posting about it is a pretty good motivational force.
well done mate. Keep at it.
Remarkable progress. Keep it up! Or should I say–down!
I have just recently discovered that apprently there is a direct correlation between massive daily ingestion of peanut butter and an increased waiste size. Who knew?
Samantha was always on a diet, which in turn means I’ve done quite a few.
I’ve always preferred the calorie controlled diet, I’m brilliant at it, I never let any of them escape.
Good on you for prolonging your life, top work.

I hate the word diet. I like to think of it as a dietary deviation. Keep up the good fight.
Haha! actually not quite my forum post – there’s no way I’d have such twee gifs for one thing but someone did use my photo of scan bran on that forum to illustrate my point.
If you are not a slimming world member you can get it at Waitrose as well.

Jolly well done! I’ve been dieting this year and it’s the first time in my life I’ve actually followed a diet properly. Apparently dieting properly gives you a higher chance of losing weight – who knew?!
Wine is my downfall (as you know), and I love wine more than my children so I’m not giving it up!

Good luck with the diet. I have 30 pounds to go myself.

Nicely done Sir! You may be the second person I know of that has drawn a correlation between exercise and losing weight. May be some truth to it after all. Who knew!

Hello there
You’ve commented on my blog before. Now I’m commenting on yours. I’ve been trying to lose weight all year. Now you’re trying to lose weight. Funny old world, isn’t it?
I recently joined a gym and am really enjoying it. If you can’t find the time for a gym however, I would really recommend you buy one of those giant gym balls. They do wonders for your stomach muscles, and what’s more, you can just sit on them for lots of bouncy fun comfort. Try it. You might like it.

First, congratulations on the weight loss Dan.
Secondly, like Bête de Jour, I also joined our local Gym.
I heard about this new state of the art machine they have aquired. But after using it for 20 minutes I was starting to feel sick and ready for throwing up………..
Still, it is a great machine……….. it does Mars Bars, Galaxy, Coke and every flavour of crisps imaginable. lol
Way to go Dan, and of course you too Kerry.
Good for you. Losing weight and not blogging about it is much better than blogging that you’re going to lose weight and doing nothing…I think I know someone who did that.
And I think I’ll convert my weight to stone…it sounds much better.

I wonder if loosing weight may be the cause of your sudden mosquito attraction? I read somewhere that they’re attracted to people with a higher metabolism because they produce more carbon dioxide. I wasn’t sure I believed it but it might be true.

Mosquitoes desire me intensely, and I think they desired me even more when I was four stone heavier, and I think that that was because of all the Sugar Puffs I ate. Sugar Puffs sweeten the blood. Fact.

PG – It’s true, when dieting pressure is always your friend.
Ed – I am missing peanut butter most of all.
SingleParentDad – I figure if I don’t prolong my life then no one else is going to do it for me.
Gail – Male tramps or female tramps?
DC Urban Dad – The theory is I need to deviate my diet like this for the rest of my life. which if I think about it too long is a little depressing.
Jane – I didn’t think it looked like you, but I just assumed.
Penelope – I’ve never been a big fan of wine. Milk is my downfall, which is rather sad really.
Phil – Hey, if you’re willing to give me money for it then I’m willing to take it.
Chuck – Someone should write a scientific paper on it or something.
James – As long as it’s one of those mutant worms.
Bete de Jour – I have a bit of a phobia about gyms, but I’ve decided that once I lose another two stone I’m going to join up.
The Warmisham’s – Thank you Bobby and Isa Davro.
Darren – The problem with stone is that it just doesn’t make logical sense. i mean why 14lb instead of 10?
ImPerceptible – It’s a theory, although I’m pretty sure the insect attraction came before the weight loss.
Bet de Jour – I think your thinking of Honey Monsters
Jo – Did you answer the phone “Hello fatty, how may I help you?”
Holmes – Thank you sir.
Whit – I’m almost down to my fighting weight, but at the moment I’m just about at my sitting around watching TV weight.
Stick with it, weight loss is a slow journey but we make it tougher than it should be. In my opinion I think it’s more of a mental challenge than a physical one… our bodies really don’t need junk food and our body likes to exercise, we just have to get over the mental hurdle.
Good luck!
Hi, hope this comment gets through I’m still new to this whole blogging thing.
great post! I found your blog while
looking for other people’s weight loss stories. I’ve actually just started blogging about
my weight loss success story – I lost over 30 pounds in a month
with a diet I developed!

I agree, sometimes its just psychological. If we lose interest, then we stop. Just always get motivated.
