Change of plan.

We’ve discovered that O2, the phone company that offers the iPhone over here, doesn’t provide a network coverage that extends to our house. Basically the only place that we can get a signal is waving it over our head in one corner of our bedroom.

This of course is despite O2’s website claiming our postcode’s signal was “strong”.

Kerry has come to the difficult decision that this means the phone isn’t worth keeping. She’s very disappointed.

However, as I’m a grumpy curmudgeon who shuns human contact I’ve decided that having a mobile that doesn’t work unless I’m actually mobile is a tolerable thing providing, you know, I get to have a iPhone to play with. So I’m having it.

I feel very guilty.

Can anyone think of a good birthday present?

***Update 03/09/08 10am***

When I got to work I discovered that the iPhone doesn’t have a reception in my office either. At least not enough of one for the 3G internet to work. So it’s back to Kerry to reconsider if she can cope with it not working in the house, and if not then it’s back to the shop with it.

Oh well, easy come easy go. And it has certainly expunged my guilt about stealing Kerry’s toy.

My wife’s birthday is next week. I’m getting her one of those Flip Video Cameras. They’re around $120.

Have you thought about getting her a Blackberry? The new BB Thunder is supposed to be a very cool touch-screen phone. The new BB Bold has the keyboard, and the screens on both are supposed to be better than the iPhone. Of course, neither phone comes out in time for her birthday, and an IOU isn’t much fun for her to open.

    Hmmmm… What else?

Oh, I know… An Amazon Kindle! Only $359. Just think, no more hefting heavy books around the house.

The new Ben Folds CD is out. Or would that be more for you?

I’ve heard it is the thought that counts.

Surely you can spare her one of those ;-)

Apparently you should avoid cell phones as a gift.

    Now that’s a real bummer isn’t it?

Or divine punishment for the sin of ‘envy’.

Hmmmm now I’m a wondering if it would work here…

I had this trouble with my 3G phone from Three: virtually no reception at home despite what the coverage map claimed.

However, it turned out that Three partner with a couple of other big mobile networks so I could at least get decent regular (non-3G) coverage once they had enabled my phone to use those networks when I couldn’t get coverage with Three. I wonder if O2 have a similar arrangement?

Also, I’ve noticed that 3G coverage is improving, or rather H coverage (according to my phone’s graphic).

Finally, despite thinking it might be a gimic I’d end up never using, video calling is great and I use it often to talk to Hayley and the kids during the working week.

Is that enough excuses, erm I mean perfectly good reasons to keep it?

Phil – I didn’t know there was a new Ben Folds CD out!! I shall have to look it up.

SingleParentDad – I thought about buying her a new car too.

VegasDad – Judging by our experiences, yes.

Gail – You do realise I hold you responsible for the whole affair.

Penelope – We’re on plan C now, and it involves Kerry keeping the phone and us upgrading our landline so as to get free evening calls.

Avitable – I didn’t think we did, but we must do.

Steve – I’m not sure. We had exactly the same problem with Orange, but my 3G vodaphone phone works just fine. Bah.

Ah, sorry, the Ben Folds CD is still three weeks away.

Today, he announced that he’s getting back together with those other two guys in Ben Folds Five for a special one-time concert in North Carolina. First time they’ve played together in ten years.

Phil – I noticed in the paper yesterday evening that Ben Folds was touring in support with counting crows. I would have thought he was too big to be doing that, but maybe just in my mind.

If you can wait til October/November then you could get the Sony Erikson Xperia X1. Bit like an iphone, but you can choose your network, how’s vodafone for you?
