There was a time when I would sing along heartily to Elvis Costello’s “Tramp the dirt Down” (a song specifically about Thatcher’s demise). Nowadays not so.

Perhaps I’m just not an angry young man any more. Or perhaps part of me feels a hypocrite for praising the last ten years of labour (or at least the sort of things Dan lists above) when they left in tact many of the things that made us so angry back then.

James – She was your idea of the English? I’m surprised you could bring yourself to talk to me.

Gail – I bet they have you know. For example, tax free nursery vouchers you can buy through your salary aren’t means tested. Nor is the free half day mon-fri nursery education for three year olds (Our local school doesn’t have a nursery, so we even got given the money to pay for this privately).

Plus there is the decade of finacial prosperity that you’ve probably benefited from (ok, its gone to pot now – but that’s the world climate and not Labours falt, no matter what the daily mail says). Never mind about the heavy investment in education, particularly adult education. Would your job exisit under the tories? I have no idea, but it might not have.

I’m not really a Labour man anymore, they don’t lean far enough left for my liking. But I can recognize they have done some good, even if they have balls things up in other areas (iraq)

And here ends the party political broadcast

can’t say labour have done much for me personally. We are of the ilk of those who earn a few quid more than you need to get everything we could get for nothing yet don’t earn enough to pay for it ourselves.

casting a vote is like having to choose between sticking a hot poker in your eye or cutting off a foot.
