Political science

Slight change of pace today as I stare into my crystal ball and make a few predictions of the future of the British political landscape. Not my usual topic I admit, but it’s always good to mix it up a bit.

Feel free to disagree with me, I always enjoy a bit of a mass debate.

  1. Labour will lose the next election. Bit of a no brainer there. However the Tories will only stay in for one term. The world economy will continue to decline and houses will get repossessed and people will lose their jobs. The general public will not be able to comprehend this is a global problem and will blame the government (just as they are doing now). They will be reminded of the mess the country was in during the Tories reign in the 80’s and the party will lose the trust of the nation.
  2. The BNP will continue to gain support as the right wing newspapers publicly decry their existence yet continue to publish scaremongering articles about immigration. It is actually quite scary how popular the BNP are now. They aren’t winning many seats, but they are coming second and third in an alarming number of them.
  3. The NHS will gradually be turned into a central healthcare purchasing organization rather than a national healthcare provider. No matter how crap you think the NHS are now, trust me this would be worse. These wont be the nice middle class BUPA hospitals, they will be hospitals manned by the cheapest staff possible and run by managers only interested in profits and contracts.
  4. Politicians will continue to spout environmental rhetoric without actually having the courage to put effective policies in place. Excuses for this will include that age old favorite “There is no point changing our behavior because China and America aren’t doing anything”. This is like saying murdering people is justified because Peter Sutcliffe and Harold Shipman did it.
  5. We will see an increasing celebritisation of politicians. Political parties will come to the realization that people voted for Boris Johnson because they liked him on Have I got news for you and start recruiting media personalities to run for office
  6. .

Any more?

I’m not so sure about Labour losing the next election, it all depends on how many false promises the Tory’s are prepared o lie about with no intention or actually no possible way of fulfilling them – promise enough to the electorate and they’ll forget to ask how you are going to achieve it.

The main thing about all of the opposition party’s at the moment is that they are also clueless and can only criticise everytime they open their mouths – ask what they wold do instead and none of them have any answer or sensible policy in mind – which isn’t what you want to hear from a politician.

I’d also make it compulsory for anyone who intends voting for the BNP to go to their web site and read their manifesto from the last general election, then spend two seconds thinking about whether it would work as national policy, you’d need to be a corpse that had its brain removed (just in case) to still put an “X” in their box.

Unfortunately, I suspect that many BNP voters are brainless corpses.

I’m with you on all them except for #3, and that’s just because I don’t see anything there at that level.

#1 mirrors Ireland in a way, FF will lose the next election, but FG will only last the course of 1 term.
Thats the trend with the economic situation on the horizon.

#2 mirrors Ireland and Holland from what Ive seen, Ireland never had ‘foreigners’ before, and it’s not an issue until jobs and homes and norms get challenged, natives get restless and want to protect their ‘own’.
A very severe politician in Holland won a lot of support a couple of years back, he was running on the message that Holland was for the Dutch. He got shot dead…

#3 The environmental policies that ARE being put into place are being done primarily for economic gain, not for the good of the environment.
I do think it’s just another form of taxation. Steps DO need to be taken, but they will only happen when we are willing to foot the bill.

    #4 This scares me.

We’ve been discussing where we want to move more permanently, Ireland looks out of the question, the economy outlook there is bleeker than ever.
The UK we have seriously looked at, the much maligned social issues being the biggest hurdle there.
At this stage, we know we have maybe 3 years here, but where we go after that is a real mystery.

mortgages are rising here, fortunately I live in a relatively cheap part of the Netherlands, so it’ll take a bit longer.
As to British politics..I don’t know much about it, but choosing that Boris guy seemt (sp) like a strange choice. There’ve been a bunch of ‘famous Dutchman’ in parties overhere, but they failed hard.

    Some more:

Eventually people will realise that oil price are high because there is not enough oil in the ground and there is nothing that the government can do about that.

Food prices will continue to rise as a result of aforementioned oil prices, plus environmental instability (drought / floods etc).

All of this plus population rises and development will lead to someone invading someone else, someone else pretending to intervene but actually trying to secure some form of resources to their own benefit. Economic and political migration etc etc.

    God I am depressed.

Sadly I think that you could well be right on all counts. All this bollox about choice in the NHS I don’t want choice I want quality, and really what choice is there when the next hospital is an hour’s drive away from here?

I predict the world will suddenly become a happy, shining place full of love, joy, smiles and free food. (especially cocktail sausages, these should be available on the NHS as they never fail to make people happy)

Hi Dan, nice to be back and see that you are still going strong, will donate for the walk as soon as I’m sure the mortgage has cleared tomorrow! Love to the family x

I am in absolutely no way commenting on number 1. In no way. This is me stepping back from the unexploded bomb keeping my eye on it in a very twitchy manner… and praying that you are wrong…

    About the 1 term.
    And now I am running.

Politics will always be just that, no matter where in the world you are. Sprouting rhetoric without actually putting policies into place. ‘insert topic of choice here’

Gary – On first glance the BNP’s stuff looks halfway reasonable. It’s only if you actually think about it that you see the underling hatred. Unfortunately a lot of people aren’t actually thinking about it.

    Clair – Yep.

Xbox – From my limited grasp of wold politics it looks like the whole of Europe is dealing an upsurge in far right politics. Scary stuff.

Arjan – Boris became famous for acting like a bumbling fool. Quite why Londoners believed that that would be a good trait in a mayor is beyond me. I realize that in truth he is an intelligent man, but that still leaves him a manipulative fake for putting on such an act to gain popularity.

Sam – Current oil prices are high because of greed, not scarcity (and I don’t care what you say, it isn’t the governments fault). But you are right, wars are going to start breaking out once we start running dry.

    Arjan – a good point.

Jane – And this “choice” isn’t going to be an informed one. It’s all crap.

    (un)relaxeddad – I prefer Mel Brooks personaly

Becky – I can’t work out which one of the many Becky’s I know you are. But you are right about the cocktail sausages. But I think they need to be on cocktail sticks with pineapple too.

    Bec – Coward! :)

James – Sadly true. I was interested to here Obama’s reaction to some gun control legislation that was going on in the states. It’s gone from “yes we can” to “no comment” rather quickly

Comparing BNP voters to brainless corpses is an insult to brainless corpses.

But on a more serious note – sadly I can see all of your points coming true.

And on a Mugabe related note – there really is no justice in this world is there?

Although I did rather like Boris on ‘Have I Got News for You”. Maybe it’s because he’s also blonde and….

Bec – Pah. Perhaps I can draw you out if I mention I think Camron is a policyless Blair clone put forward by a party who are more interested in gaining power than staying true to their ideology (come on now, there is no way you can resist pointing out that labour is exactly the same)

Morricia – There’s no justice, and there never has been I’m afraid.

Gail – To be fair, I always thought Ken was pretty good on have I got news for you too.

Sam – As I understand it oil is high not because it’s running out now, but because the price is being driven up by investors speculating it will run out in the future (which it will, obviously, but the current price is artificially inflated y these investers – as I say, greed)
