Saturday Review: Iron Man

Kerry and I went to see Iron Man at the cinema this evening. I knew I was in for a good time when even the trailers made me wet myself with anticipation. I mean The Hulk, Dark Knight, and a new Indiana Jones film? Bugger renaissance Italy, the pinnacle of high culture is right here and now baby. It’s good to be in 2008 and a geek.

Lee over at Quit Your Day Job has been jabbering on about the Iron Man movie for around twenty to thirty years now, and I must admit I’ve been slightly cynical. Ever since the travesty that was Phantom Menace I’ve had a hard time getting worked up over the pre release hype.

But I was wrong to doubt Lee’s enthusiasm, and I’m man enough to admit it. That film was bloody brilliant. I’ve never really followed Iron Man (or any marvel comics), and so don’t know if the character stayed true to his roots. But old shell head has just shot up into 5th position in my top ten superheros based purely on Robert Downey Jr’s excelent portrayal (Displacing Gnort into 6th place Lee will be shocked to hear). I thought Jeff Bridges was fantastic too. The CGI was great, the plot was great, the action was great, the directing was great.

Go see it. It’s great.

Now I have a dilemma. Some reviews have slaughtered it so I was a-dithering over whether to go and see it or not.

I saw this cartoon and then your post - they fit together so well. Have ‘plans’ to see this during the week. Plans. So I’ll end up seeing it on DVD!

Gnort displaced!!! If it were any character but Iron Man I’d be horrified, since it is shell-head I respectfully agree. It is slightly possible this is better than its source material (actually I don’t believe that but then I’m a huge Iron Man fan anyway).

I’m pleased to see even the critics getting this right with a 94% positive rating over at rottentomatoes! (as of writing this)

Did you happen to stay after the credits finished?

Oh and I’m very convinced on old Indiana Jones now - now that movie is going to make some cash!

I thought it was awesome. It stayed somewhat true to the storyline, with the obvious updates to modernize it.

I haven’t seen a bad review yet and I doubt that I will.

I’ll be excited to see it on DVD. We don’t go to movies without the kids, and we’ve already penciled in Indiana Jones with my son and Prince Caspian with both kids.

I’m so clueless, I’d never even heard of Iron Man before this movie. Was it a comic book or something?

  6. 6 Avitable

It was awesome - did you see the extra clip after the credits with Nick fucking Fury?

Avitable’s last blog post..Don’t bother reading this.

Gail - I don’t think I’ve seen a single negative review, you must read different papers to me. It’s well worth seeing if you liek your action and superhero films

Bec - It would be worth seeing at the pictures I think.

Lee - Yes, Indiana Jones looked very good indeed. The only thing that could possibly spoil it if if the introduction of his son is done clumsily.

Whit - It was indeed awesome

Phil - Prince Caspian looks pretty good too. Irom man is a Marvel character, arguably from their B list when it comes to fame.

Avitable - Unfortunately we left before the end of the credits. I wish i’d known to stay. I’ll catch that bit on DVD (although I am tempted to go back and see it again)

Like you , I don’t know the original story line - but you’ve sold me on the movie. I’m going first chance I get!

Your review of Iron Man was the first I’d read, but since then I’ve read a dozen or so. It’s been a long, long time since an action movie has received this kind of praise.

One website said it was good for kids above age 8, that the violence was of the “big boom” kind, and there was only limited language and sexual innuendo.

I might just take my son to see this, as it would certainly be more exciting on the big screen than at home.

This is looking like a great summer at the box office: Batman, Indian Jones, Narnia, Speed Racer, Kung Fu Panda, Hulk, Get Smart, Wall-E, Hancock, The Mummy 3, X-Files 2…

I can’t wait to see it!

Saw this last night. I was suitably impressed!

Wish I had read the stuff about the end credits before I went though.

Phil - The sex is about the same as a bond movie. I wouldn’t say it was limited, but it was rather innocent if you know what i mean.

The violence was big bang, but there were faintly disturbing scenes of terrorists victimizing a village. And a few executions too (off camera)

Still think you should see it, but didn’t want you to blame me if you felt it was inappropriate. Kerry remarked on our way out that she was surprised it hadn’t been rated 15

Thanks for answering some questions Dan. My 5 year old wants to go and I told him he wasn’t old enough. He loves this kind of film but I was wondering if there woud be some innappropriate stuff in there.

Will probably just wait for a DVD and then we can ffwd those bits.

Hmmm… I think this has given me an idea for a blog post….

  15. 15 Kerry

My comment on the film’s rating was more to do with the fact I don’t know what makes films a 15 over a 12A anymore.

But I’m the one who’s surprised Doctor Who’s meant for 8 year olds too… kids must be less scared these days!

So under 12s - depends if the kids are ok with James Bond type violence too.

  16. 16 Mr. Fabulous

So you sat there with wet pants through the whole movie?

    Not cool, man.

I think I’ll go watch the film before reading both your glorious reviews ;)

Fantastic film - i just watched it, and intend to watch it again soon. Robert Downey is just brilliant.

  19. 19 Joe

That review lacked substance. I loved it. My type of review. Short and sweet without all the hyperbole. Nice review and I will now see it and post a short review (see rather long winded and annoying) at some point. Peace!

I wasn’t a fan on Iron Man when I was reading other Marvel titles, but this film intrigues me - and I haven’t seen it yet, dammit - because what I DO know of Tony Stark, RDJ matches perfectly. It’s brilliant casting and perfect for his snarky delivery style. I’ve watched all the previews I can find and I hope I haven’t ruined all the best dialogue for myself, but it seems dead funny. My husband and I can’t see it for another week or so, but we’re primed.

  21. 21 jewels

Marvel has run out of comics to make movies from! OK, so I was never a big superhero fan, but Iron Man was certainly not a common school room word.

  22. 22 DotA AllStars

I watched the movie, ppl who was reading Marvel will enjoy it more.

Mr N and I have to go and see it. We love stuff like this.

By the time I get round to seeing this (tonight), every blogger in the world will have beaten me to the review! I’m not happy.
