Kerry and I went to see Iron Man at the cinema this evening. I knew I was in for a good time when even the trailers made me wet myself with anticipation. I mean The Hulk, Dark Knight, and a new Indiana Jones film? Bugger renaissance Italy, the pinnacle of high culture is right here and now baby. It’s good to be in 2008 and a geek.
Lee over at Quit Your Day Job has been jabbering on about the Iron Man movie for around twenty to thirty years now, and I must admit I’ve been slightly cynical. Ever since the travesty that was Phantom Menace I’ve had a hard time getting worked up over the pre release hype.
But I was wrong to doubt Lee’s enthusiasm, and I’m man enough to admit it. That film was bloody brilliant. I’ve never really followed Iron Man (or any marvel comics), and so don’t know if the character stayed true to his roots. But old shell head has just shot up into 5th position in my top ten superheros based purely on Robert Downey Jr’s excelent portrayal (Displacing Gnort into 6th place Lee will be shocked to hear). I thought Jeff Bridges was fantastic too. The CGI was great, the plot was great, the action was great, the directing was great.
Go see it. It’s great.

I’m pleased to see even the critics getting this right with a 94% positive rating over at rottentomatoes! (as of writing this)
Did you happen to stay after the credits finished?
Oh and I’m very convinced on old Indiana Jones now – now that movie is going to make some cash!

I’m so clueless, I’d never even heard of Iron Man before this movie. Was it a comic book or something?

Bec – It would be worth seeing at the pictures I think.
Lee – Yes, Indiana Jones looked very good indeed. The only thing that could possibly spoil it if if the introduction of his son is done clumsily.
Whit – It was indeed awesome
Phil – Prince Caspian looks pretty good too. Irom man is a Marvel character, arguably from their B list when it comes to fame.
Avitable – Unfortunately we left before the end of the credits. I wish i’d known to stay. I’ll catch that bit on DVD (although I am tempted to go back and see it again)

One website said it was good for kids above age 8, that the violence was of the “big boom” kind, and there was only limited language and sexual innuendo.
I might just take my son to see this, as it would certainly be more exciting on the big screen than at home.
This is looking like a great summer at the box office: Batman, Indian Jones, Narnia, Speed Racer, Kung Fu Panda, Hulk, Get Smart, Wall-E, Hancock, The Mummy 3, X-Files 2…

The violence was big bang, but there were faintly disturbing scenes of terrorists victimizing a village. And a few executions too (off camera)
Still think you should see it, but didn’t want you to blame me if you felt it was inappropriate. Kerry remarked on our way out that she was surprised it hadn’t been rated 15

Will probably just wait for a DVD and then we can ffwd those bits.

My comment on the film’s rating was more to do with the fact I don’t know what makes films a 15 over a 12A anymore.
But I’m the one who’s surprised Doctor Who’s meant for 8 year olds too… kids must be less scared these days!
So under 12s – depends if the kids are ok with James Bond type violence too.
