The truth about cats and dogs
on Jan 18 in General by DanWhen Amy was 18 months old she used to spend her days sitting on the rug listening to harpsichord music and crocheting elaborate tapestries. She would pause only to take a dainty sip out of a delicate bone china tea cup or engage in the occasional swoon.
Of course my recollection may be colored faintly by the rosy mists of time, but I’m pretty sure that’s what happened.
Evan, on the other hand, spends his time launching himself off various items of furniture and playing a game where he finds out how many things he can smash in one minute, then tries to beat that number.
If Amy is Pride and Prejudice, then Evan is Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Crockery Cupboard.
I don’t know if it is the gender difference, the fact that he is the second child, or just contrasting personalities, but Evan is quickly teaching us that just because we’ve had one doesn’t mean we’re dab hands for the second.
And do you know what? I love it. Just like I love my gentle, tentative daughter, I love my rambunctious and adventurous son. It doesn’t get much better than this.

My son, the first one, was the quiet and gentile one. Man he was easy.
My daughter? Well, that girl is hell fire personified.

And if you have a 3rd (or more) they will all be different as well. That’s the beauty of kids – they’re a mixed bag of surprises.
Jeff’s last blog post..No, really… it wasn’t me!
Jeff said it. I’ve got 5 very distinct and individual personalites on my hands and when they all get going at once it’s really something to behold.
Oh, and I’ve got kids, too. I didn’t know that many different personalities could come from one gene pool.

I’m one of three kids (got an older sister and a younger brother), and we’re very different in a lot of things.

Amongst all the parents at our ante-natal group, we were the only ones to end up having a boy. In the months after the birth it was amazing to see how quickly Oliver’s boyish behaviour differentiated him from his female playmates. It was certainly clear to see before his first birthday.
On the subject of differing siblings, Oliver’s younger sister is about as placid and mild-mannered as any 5 month old could be. Hayley and I had decided that we just wanted 2 children, but despite this we’ve each several times uttered the words “If we could be sure the next one would be like Lucy….”.
But every one (as they cliche goes) is different. And, like you, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Whereas I was a real tantrum in the middle of Debenhams kid my brother was an angel in disguise. So it’s not gender or order… Or maybe I’m just odd!

Given that dudelet is a herd of rhinoceroses personified at times, I can only hope that it works out that way with our new little girl. She’s certainly yet to land on me from a great height screaming “Time to fight!” But then, she is only seven weeks old.
