My Little Pony
“I love you my little pony”
The My little Pony cartoon series was based on the toys produced by Hasbro. It was set in the mystical world of Ponyland where the three different types of ponies (Earth Ponies, Pegasus Ponies, and Unicorns) frolicked in the woods and fields of their home, Paradise Estates. It featured ponies such as Peach Blossom, Rosedust, Northstar and…

It’s no good, I just can’t do it. I just can’t sully my blog with this complete claptrap. In the 80’s the boys got Thundercats and Transformers, and all the girls got Care Bears and My Little Pony. That hardly seems fair. What happened to equality of the sexes? Did Florence Nightingale die in vain!? I am surprised that there wasn’t a uprising in the streets. Forget burning bras, people should be burning their Barbies.
Â
I did discover some interesting things though. Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, played a number of different parts in the show. In fact by doing this series on cartoons of the 80’s I’ve been amazed by the number of voice actors that keep cropping up over and over again. I suppose it was inevitable given that many of the programs were created by the same production studios.

So anyway, tomorrow is the last day of advent and so there is only one more cartoon to go. Any guesses? i’ll give you a clue, it was responsible for one of the funniest lines in Hot Fuzz

Are you glad this is almost over?
I may not make it back tomorrow. A very merry Christmas to you and the family.

I wasn’t allowed to have Barbie dolls when I was little. Something about the breasts. Explains a few things about me I suppose…

you know… I really hate to admit this but as a little kid I loved those damn ponies.
I’ve seen Hot Fuzz three or four times, but I can’t think of the reference. He-Man, is it?

And now I have the words “My little pony, skinny and bony, made out of plastic - not so fantastic” to the tune of He-Man going round in my head. That should cheer up the Christmas shopping!
By the power of Greyskull!
I have a much younger sister who thankfully never succumbed to these plastic monstrosities, she did succumb to the lure of Sylvanian Families, Care Bears, Cabbage Patch Dolls and Take That (but only Mark Owen) so I should be grateful really.
I loved Skeletor the best - a much misunderstood and maligned chappy.
It’s probably time I jumped on here. I had loads of my little pony toys, and since Amy’s 4th birthday, she’s getting in to them too. We’ve even seen the christmas movie on Cartoonio.
Just to kill all my geek-cred, I used to get Care Bear comics and collected the posable figures. Although I did play She-ra with my friends in the playground at school, whilst the boys played He-man, so perhaps all is not lost.
catching up with comments..
@thundercats: Panthro was my favorite. I also have the tank.
@ GI JOE: we never had the early version of action man, but we do watched gi joe. I think it gave me at least one or two nightmares. I also have a jigsaw of it glued on cartboard :)
@ My little ponies: somehow I also watched this.
By the way, do you know Robot Chicken? If not, go search for it. Lot’s of funny sketches referring a lot to cartoons from the 80s. Thundercats, GI Joe and He-man are used a lot.
