Care Bears
“Care Bear Stare”
The Care Bears were originally created by American Greetings for a line of birthday cards. The company are responsible for a number of other crimes against humanity (Strawberry Shortcake and The Get Along Gang to name but two). But it is for the likes of Funshine Bear, Love-a-lot Bear, and Tenderheart Bear that they will burn in eternal damnation.
I used to watch them a lot though, and even remember lusting after the Bedtime Bear playset, so perhaps I shall be joining American Greetings in their fiery torment.
My sister was a big Care Bear fan, and once got one for Christmas. However my parents had proven immune to the marketing machine and instead of getting her an official bear had instead bought a customized with her name sown on it’s belly. I’m not sure what powers the Megan Bear had, but I’m pretty sure they would have revolved around sleeping for 23 hours a day and an inability to hide it’s secret diary very well.

I never realized American Greetings created them. Bastards.
You’d never see Hallmark pull that crap.

Whit - Hallmark created Rainbow Brite. You can’t trust any of the swine.

My daughters love those effing bears!!! I thought I had been able to avoid the whole mess when my mother in law shows up with one for Christmas 2 years ago. Now they’re everywhere.

Your sister got a customized bear!? My parents never did get me any of the care bears stuff I wanted. (All I really wanted was a Grumpy Bear.)
This was one of those shows that came on in the morning before I had to leave for school (along with Smurfs and the Smoggies) and the sad part is that I still know all the words to the theme.
I have to say I’m terribly disappointed that kids still watch this show but other excellent shows like She-ra, He-man, Rainbow Brite, Thundercats and Jem fell out of favour. I even have cousins who have no idea what Smurfs or Smoggies are.

I saw the Care Bear movie as a child, I think it was in a matinee with the original Transformers movie. It was one of those “get rid of the kids for a few hours while we go shopping” matinees that they used to do (probably not any more, what with paedophiles and global warming and polish immigrants and all that*).
But yeah, I sat through the whole thing. Amazingly it didn’t have any effect on me, I grew up a normal adult male!

Oh yeah I had meant to stick the following on the end for the asterisk:
