Day One: Five questions

meme.jpgLee over at Quit Your Day Job starts off the official International Week of the Meme by tagging me with the 5 Questions MeMe. Before I get stuck in however I would just like to ask a favor of you. Those people who aren’t reading through a feed aggregator will probably notice that the design of the blog has changed a little bit. I haven’t had chance to test it in all the different browsers and screen resolutions as yet, so I’d be extremely grateful if anyone who notices a problem with it on their setup could let me know. Also if anyone has other comments or suggestions, positive or negative, then those would very much appreciated too. Thanks.

Back to the meme:

1. Marvel Comics or DC? (or have you no idea what I’m talking about?)

Between the ages of 14 and 18 my mother gave me a monthly clothing allowance with which I was supposed to buy all my own clothes. Coincidentally between the ages of 14 and 18 I started buying a hell of a lot of comics. And dressing in rags.

I have always been a DC fan. Mainly I suspect because that is who J.M. DeMattis and Keith Giffen were writing for at the time that I first got into comics. You can keep your Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns; Justice League International will always be the pinnacle of comicdom for me. But these days all my favorite characters are dead, forgotten, or irrevocably traumatised: Booster Gold, Ice, Gnort, Elongated Man, and worst of all Blue Beetle. Oh my God, they killed Blue Beetle! You Bastards!

Recently I’ve taken to going into Borders and hiding away in a corner to read graphic novels without actually having to buy anything. I’ve been extremely impressed with the Ultimate Avengers books and so if I ever got back into comics then I might be tempted to switch my allegiance to Marvel in order to punish DC for their treachery.

I’ll still take Batman Begins over Spiderman any day of the week though.

2. Your favorite sculpture/statue?

There is a bronze statue of a flock of seagulls outside the Norwich Union building in Leeds city center that I’ve always been rather partial to (the photographs aren’t mine unfortunately).

3. Your favorite painting?

In a desperate attempt to avoid exposing my philistine nature I will take the schmaltzy option. There are probably more expensive and technically accomplished works of art in existence, but the handprints of my wife, son, and daughter are able to say things to me that a Monet will never say.

4. If you have to watch a sport which one do you prefer?

Women’s beach volleyball. It’s either that or Kabadi.

5. Are ghosts real?

I once very nearly got myself into a fist fight with a housemate because I made an offhand remark that I didn’t believe in ghosts and he took that to mean I was calling him a liar because he had “seen” one. I don’t believe in ghosts, clairvoyants, horoscopes, spiritual healing or Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo. Glad we got that sorted out.

———-

So now the rules are that I have to come up with my own list of five questions:

  1. Who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
  2. Why do birds suddenly appear everytime you are near?
  3. What’s new pussycat?
  4. Why must I be a teenager in love?
  5. Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

I tag anyone who is able to stomach my lazy half arsed attempt to get out of trying to think of any interesting questions.

The answer to each and every one of your questions is…

    The Talented Mr. Honey…

    *swoons*

  • 0. I’m at work with Internet Explorer. New design looks great. I even recognize the picture in the frame.

    1. I suppose it has to be Marvel. I grew up with Tex (the Texan cowboy).

    2. I saw somewhere in England a statue of a giant rabbit? Or was I imagining that? I was on my way back from Glastonbury so anything is possible.

    3. Cute. You can tell the yellow is very firm–very older sister.

    4. Just because there are more people like me out there doesn’t make me less of a pervert.

    5. I wish I knew for sure. Have you ever met a Japanese person who didn’t see a ghost?

    6. I tagged you with blogging tips thingy. Don’t be mad. You don’t have to do it, you know. But it’ll be fun.

People in the Sun – To be honest I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone from Japan at all. I’ve met quite a few Chinese people, but I was in China at the time.

And I’d noticed you had tagged me. Thank you very much, my effort will be coming shortly.

um, I was just going to make a flock of seagulls joke, but now I’m all embarrassed

the new look is nice, btw

  • Lee says:

Dude I was going to comment on your list but then you had to go changing your template and making me stare at the shininess and sparkle of it and forgetting about your interesting responses.

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm new template argggglllllllllll.

In case one was wondering that means I like the new template… love the new template.

As a young man I too was drawn to JL Int for its unique humor, something not explored in the other comics I was reading at the time. I always remember with fondness the issue where the Galactus rip off shows up to redecorate the planet in awful colours.

    Just pure fun.

I really like that sculpture – I’m really glad I asked that because I’ve seen some really interesting pieces and your favorite painting makes me smile (broadly) (is there an emoticon for smiling broadly?)

  • I like the new design, but I noticed your Island Girl filter isn’t working — she’s still able to post comments.

  • Darren says:

Great new design. I like it.

  • Oli says:

I’d love to think that you just happened to hit the shutter release accidentally, and capture your homelife in just one photo. So that’s the way it shall stay in my head.

Is Batman begins a comic/graphic-novel? I have no idea about these things, as I read books instead, but then I was always vexed by the childish terminology of Scrooge McDuck’s three nephews (one point each for remembering their names). I mean – “Unca Scrooge”? Honestly.

Having seen both Batman Begins and Spiderman, I think Batman Begins has a lot more to it. And I can’t wait for The Dark Knight.

Still haven’t worked out a way to video stuff. Maybe the secretaries at work will allow me to use the iCamera on their iMacs. Though I’d have to work out how to persuade them that the orangutan impressions were connected with work…

  • Avitable says:

They’ve actually killed off Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Ice, Rocket Red, Elongated Man, Elongated Man’s wife, and Max Lord.

And I think there might be one or two more, too.

DC is definitely the book of choice for me, although I love Watchmen and Dark Knight just as much as JLI. Grant Morrison’s JLA run was excellent as well.
