Smiles we gave to one another
on Jul 05 in Uncategorized by DanAt the age of 16 I left high school and went to A level college. This is where I met the majority of the friends that I still have today. Our jobs have occasionally taken us away from our home town, but there has always been a pull that has brought us back. I still count the friends I made at that time as among my best.
Wednesdays afternoon at college were allocated to “enrichment”. This was the time designated for all the teams, clubs, and societies to hold their games, practices, or meetings. Despite the official line being that this time had been set aside for both physical and intellectual pursuits, in reality all the college was really interested in was the sports teams.
So as none of us particularly felt the pull of the playing fields, we sought and gained permission to set up our own enrichment activity. Lighting Productions Video Society. In theory we were writing, producing, directing, and staring in short films, but in practice we mostly just messed around with the drama department’s video camera.
In the long summer spanning the end of college and the start of university we put together a sort of clip’s show from all the bits of tape laying around Neil’s house. I present it to you now, with the warning that this is unlikely to be of any interest to you at all unless you are actually in the thing. Also, it gets more boring the longer it goes on.
Still, it fits with my recent looks backwards; and anyway I promise to return to the regular blogging in my next entry.

I hope you still own that tin foil space jacket thing you were wearing in a few of your monologues.
These are hysterical. When was the last time you saw these Dan? How do you feel you have changed and how do you feel you are no different than that boy in the movies?
the dan on the other side of the pond.
You’re right in that these are pretty much out of context for us who weren’t there. But it looks like you were having a lot of fun – and that’s the important thing. That, and HUGE glasses.
This brings back memories… I did the same thing in college. Our “production club” was called Open Door Productions, and I’m the sole owner of most of the rubbish the resulted. Much of it hasn’t seen the light of day for 20 years. Oh yes, YouTube will change all of that very soon… I just need to dig through boxes and transfer the videos. Many of my old college friends are going to be either amused or embarrassed.
Anyway, fun stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Many memories! I recognise quite a few faces there – and how strange to see Greenhead College 12 years on. It’s hardly changed a bit.
I knew you reminded me of someone…

Hey there! It must be at least ten years since I last saw those….We had some good times didn’t we……Looking back you were the most handsome of all of us! I know thats not saying much…aside from me, Dave looks so scary…his glasses cover his entire face!
It was especially good to see Michael Leyland and the “Cluedo” scenes…! Happy days.
I haven’t cringed so much in ages. I’m not sure “thanks” is the word for posting these beauties.
I can only apologise for my failure to keep a straight face throughout college, especially when trying, but failing, to act. Daniel, hello. I bumped into Neil on a train, he told me that the Cluedo thing was on the web, and things I had completely forgotten about are now right before my very eyes! I just can’t believe that you played football without me (Part 2). I am gutted I wasn’t there that day but am always up for a rematch!
Daniel, it turns out I’m two villages away from you (after being in London for a bit) so I would love to meet for a drink after Christmas.
Oh, and I’ve got one word for you – bajambawambas!
Cheers
Michael
@The most out-of-control actor in the world, i used the term bajamawammas recently in conversation with an author, and she’s going to use it in her next book. Seriously. I’ll buy you a copy:)
We certainly will have to meet up for a drink. My email is dghughes28@yahoo.co.uk
