Amy was telling me about the visit from the Paramedics she had at nursery yesterday.
“And if there is a ‘mergency you telephone 999″.
“That’s right sweetheart you do. And what kind of things are an emergency?”
“If you bang your knee or if you don’t have any sweets”.
I think we might have to hide the telephone.

When I was little, I used to have a sweetie jar which was reserved for such emergencies.
Each sweetie had its own healing properties. Green ones were ideal for knees; reds for cranial injuries; bruises were healed using blue sweets; and elbows were to be treated with yellow ones.
It was mostly to do with rhyming, but a lot of the healing took place during the decision making process.
“What rhymes with splinter?” Err… pink?
“I’ve hurt my foot.” Have an orange one.
The system was clearly flawed by not having more colours to rhyme with body parts, but on the whole it did the trick, despite giving me a false sense of how medicine and modern day healthcare actually works. This shortcoming was brought to my mother’s attention when one day I proclaimed, “When I’m a daddy, my hand will be too big for my sweetie jar”.
(I’ve since bought a bigger sweetie jar).
That’s my kind of girl! No sweets qualifies as an emergency in my book.
Your American readers will be thinking Amy demands plateful upon plateful of dessert to stave off emergency. But dude, you just meant candy, huh? ;)
Yes that’s right, sweets= candy.
Over here in England “Candy” actually means small nocturnal rodent.
I thought the number for Emergency Services had changed.
’011 8 999 88199 9119725 3!’
In Jersey it means sex.
Quite right no sweets is an emergency as is no biscuits.
Was that Jersey as in New Jersey or Jersey Channel Islands?
I would probably prefer people calling in emergency “sweet shortages” as opposed to what they currently call for.
I can understand the need better.
Channel Islands
Morticia – is that “biscuits” as in “cookies”, or those strange slightly savoury thingies that Americans liken to “Water0 Biscuits” or “scones”?
Biscuits as in cookie type things – specifically bourbon creams, the king of biscuits.
Mmmm, bourbons….
