Dad’s Army
A Britcom from the late sixties and early seventies, but set during the Second World War. Captain Mainwaring leads a bumbling platoon of home guard (part time solders to old or young to be in the regular army) as they prepare for the very real threat of a German invasion of England.
I recently bought series 1 through 5 on DVD from Amazon and am slowly working my way through them. This just has to be the quintessential British sitcom for me. Clever, gentle, and full of fantastic characters. I don’t think that it’s particularly well known in the USA, and this is a real shame. It’s about three thousand times better than Are you being served or Benny Hill or any of that other rubbish, I don’t care what you say Dwayne.

The Goodies
Another classic comedy from the seventies, another one I have recently bought on DVD, and another one which I suspect is barely known in the US. The Goodies – Graham Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor, and Bill Oddie, were contemporaries of the Monty Python crew and went to Cambridge university alongside most of them. The comedy was similar in many ways, but I feel they were more accessible and hit the mark much more often than the Pythons. Unfairly branded a kids program the Goodies were nevertheless very successful.

I went to see this with Craig on Sunday. His partner Caroline refused to come with us saying it was a boy’s film. She was right, but it was a rather enjoyable boys film. It had swords and fighting and impressive pointy beards and everything. I do think they could have afforded better camera equipment though – everything was all yellowy. It’s was a bit like that Sin City too – why they didn’t notice that the camera was only picking up the odd splash of colour here and there is beyond me.
I had had big expectations for this film, Paul alone had whipped me into a frenzy about it’s release. I was bound to be a little disappointed once I had seen it, and I was. But looking back on it now I’d defiantly go see it again.

Dad’s Army looks like it would be hilarious. It seems a little familiar, as though I’ve seen at least part of an episode before, but I’m not sure. I’d definitely watch it if were on our local PBS. Alas, I’m stuck with Keeping Up Appearances and Last of the Summer Wine, which is hilarious.
Hubby went out on a guy’s night out a couple of weeks ago intending to go to “300″. It was sold out, so they went out for Thai food then rented a movie to watch at home instead.
Of course I teased him mercifully. Gladiator films, haute cuisine and video by candlelight (seriously!) is his idea of a guys’ night? Or is he bisexual and never bothered sharing?
So I guess now I’m teasing you too. :)
my husband has an offical “he-man women-hater’s movie club” which joins forces every time a movie such as 300 or Casino Royale come around. i’ve been an attendee at every show, so rules are rather lax.
I’ve just copied half of season three of Dad’s Army for you Dwayne. I’ll do some more tonight.
Don’t tell him, Pike!
Stupid boy.
