I was recently sent a piece of research about DIY by the nice people at the energy supplier E.ON and the DIY merchant Jewson. It it they found that the main reason that people gave for not doing DIY was because they don’t know what they are doing (52% in fact).
Well, let me assure you – that’s never been an issue that I’ve let trouble me. Just take a look at the joinery of my chicken coop for example:
As you can see – the fact I don’t have the faintest idea what I’m doing has never got in the way of me hitting bits of wood with a hammer. But before you judge to harshly, just remember that my creations aren’t slapdash ad dilapidated – they are rustic dammit!
And anyway, in my opinion they don’t look too bad if you view them at a distance:
The thing with DIY is that if you are scared of failing, you’ll never succeed at it. I’m a strong believer in just giving things a bash and seeing what happens.
To be fair I’d probably draw the line when it gets too expensive or complicated. I’m not up for building that extension just yet for example. But when it comes to putting up some shelves or having a go at building a garden wall I’m more than happy to give things a whirl.
Of course the results are always a little “rustic”, but as long as I can bluster my way into convincing others that that was the intent then I’m golden.
One of the things I haven’t tackled yet is insulating the loft. Which is something I really need to get round to as properly insulated lofts can save as much as £175 a year in energy costs (as well as improve your environmental footprint).
E.On are currently collaborating with Jewsons and providing a subsidised DIY loft insulation scheme.
In their What’s in your loft program people can buy subsidised loft insulation from over 500 branches of Jewsons in order that they can make their homes more energy efficient. And the process of installing it yourself doesn’t look all that hard either.
Plus, lets face it, it doesn’t matter if your loft looks a bit rustic. I wonder if I should insulate my chicken coop too.
How about you? Are you planning on doing any DIY this Easter weekend? Or are you planning on gorging yourself on chocolate eggs and goin ginto a coma? Inquiring minds want to know.
