After a close inspection this morning I am very happy to announce that all three of my apple trees are still alive. In fact two of them even have the beginnings of a healthy smattering of foliage. The third is a little more worrying, having only one leaf emerging on a solitary branch. I remain optimistic however, placing my trust firmly in Mr Flowerdew and his ability to guide an incompetent novice such as myself.
I’ve also planted some Ivy that will hopefully go some way to cover up the rather shoddy job I’ve made of the steps. I’m very tempted to throw up my arms and declare that my gardening duties are over for the time being. It’s getting a bit late in the year to be planting any more shrubs or trees, and any attempt to pretty the place up with bedding flowers will look fairly incongruent until some of the permanent plants become more established.
I am of course deluding myself by thinking I can put away the spade for the summer. If nothing else I’d be wise to finish off making the path and all the other landscaping tasks while the weather makes being outside a pleasurable. In addition the various weeds and grasses that currently make up the majority of the garden will soon spring into a growing orgy that will necessitate me dragging the petrol strimmer out of the shed. Oh yes, a summer of toil awaits me.
Of course I can console myself that I’ll be getting quality sleep, unlike in the winter when the new baby has arrived.
Dan, how is your wife feeling so far?
