Recently over at the Midnight Movie Club I have been accused of being a fanboy. This is an accusation I refute. A geek, yes. But a fanboy? Never.
There are those amongst you who won’t understand the distinction. I pitty you.
All that said however, there are some things that make my geek toes curl. Like the new Wonder Woman TV show for example. I’ve always found the character of Wonder Woman a little dull to be honest, and so wasn’t particularly excited by the fact they were going to launch a new show. I was even less excited when I heard it was going to be made by the creator of Ally McBeal. But I didn’t get my knickers in a twist about it. as I say, I’m not a fanboy.
But when I saw the costume that they are going to be using I really feel I need to draw a line in the sand.
Just look at it. It’s bloody awful.
For a start she’s not going to be able to move without squeaking, so that’s sneaking up on the bad guys out of the window. Secondly, those leggings are no doubt so restrictive that the worst she’s going to be able to do to anyone is give them a sharp kick in the shins. And thirdly… well thirdly it just looks like a cheap nasty “sexy halloween” costume that someone bought off ebay. Hardly the embodiment of an amazonian princess.
I mean she’s a very attractive woman and all (at least I think she is under all that airbrushing), but this could have been so much better.
Bah.

Whilst I agree with you completely I would point out that occasionally these more plastic looking costumes look fine on screen once through a filter, proper lighting and lenses.
I like the idea of what they’ve gone for because the “classic” Wonder Woman costume would be near impossible to film effectively without turning it into soft porn. But I’d personally have stuck with red boots but that’s just preference and not some fanboy wail.
I think as soon as you put high heels into a costume you’ve lost me.
I actually quite like the recent DC redesign they did. I felt it was much more practical.
And you are soooo a fanboy. You even wreck the podcast with your favourite book dedicated to Wonder Woman and everything.
On another note (and because I suspect you’ll be the only one to comment on this post) I do like the fact they are moving away from the patriotic elements of the costume. they just never made any sense. Wonder Woman’s not even from America for gods sake.
Yeah same, it never really made sense at all. There’s supposed to be a certain pride regarding the Amazonian people and then WW defers to the American way.
I love the redesign except for the jacket but that was only a little element. Of course my expectation is that they’ll revert back to the original as a big selling point.
I think it’s terrible, and I find her to be rather ugly, especially with that headband.
Saw this ukulele player on Youtube and thought of you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JX13LwnZss
Can you do that yet?
I am a little late to the party as I have been at my inlaws all day, here’s my thoughts.
While I am pleased they kept the basic look and feel of the costume, it looks way too shiny, plastic and looks like it was purchased at a toy store of some cheap party hire costume shop. I dont mind the blue pant but why didnt they make it the darker blue and give her red boots that she could actually fight in.
I do agree with Lee’s point about costumes looking different on screen, I remember they released a pic of Batman from the Dark Knight in a brightly lit room against a white wall and it looked pretty crap but looks great in the film.
Secondly, Diana is supposed to be an Amazon Warrior she is supposed to have a foreboding presence she seems to be terribly miscast. And the fact that its being done by David E Kelly makes me cringe he obviously doesnt read comics.
Somehow I missed this post earlier. You’ve pretty much said exactly what I was about to write in my own post on the subject. I much prefer the new WW costume in the comics. Wish they would have gone that way (and I like the jacket, too).
I don’t expect this show will get much airtime in our household (though I also doubt my curiosity will allow me to stay away completely).
I think Tea Leoni did a better job of looking like Wonder Woman :)
Hey Dan did you see the costume revision for this yet? They gave her red boots and a few tweeks.

I saw it, it looks better, but I’m still not impressed
Looks better without the spray on latex trousers but the actress isn’t right for the role, which is a shame.
She looks slightly young for it. I just don’t think I’m going to bother unless it starts getting really great reviews.
I don’t think there is really such a thing as an “actress” under 35 atm. There’s you’re walking pair of knockers who can just about remember her lines, they last until their mid twenties and then there’s 35 year olds playing much older women and old women playing old women.
For example, no-one on this planet would credit Megan Fox with acting ability would they? I was recently surprised to see the remake of Amityville Horror with a 32 year old Melissa George mother to teenage kids. And lets not forget her from Eastenders playing a bionic mum in that short lived remake of the bionic woman, so we know people in the late 20′s/early 30′s tend to play characters 10+ years older than they are.
Natalie Portman and Keira Kightley are the two exceptions but that’s because they look like 12 year old boys and we all know about Hollywood film producers…
Your not you’re dammit.
