nice list. I want to try and come up with my own but I don’t reckon I’d ever be able to decide. Not only can I not make a decision to save my life but my tastes seem to change on a whim.

Wow, I was going to include some TV series characters in my list.
Hmmm, going to have to do some thinking about this one.
Problem is, most of the compelling characters I’ve seen lately are from shows like The Wire (hello, McNulty!) but that’s kind of cheating, since a series like that has 60 hours over 5 years to develop the character. Not really fair to movies, which only have about 120 minutes. (barring sequels).

Off topic and I should have emailed you about this before now so apologies but I forgot til now and then couldn’t find your email address but tomorrow night (Thursday 16th) at the New Roscoe in Leeds is Ukelele Night with all sorts of ukelele related stuff – performers and competitions. If you can get there I’m sure you’d enjoy it.

A great list. And not throwing way L&H is very very advisable.

I’ll start making a list tomorrow, I hópe I get some time tomorrow evening to really write it down..otherwise it won’t be till sundaynight.
I hope ‘speciality’ doesn’t mean anywhere near bad :P, but I’ll try to make a Dutch movielist incl. a little synopsis.

Gregory’s there by his own merits though. It’s a stunning film. I advise against watching the sequel though. It’s not a truely awful film, but it certainly doesn’t add anything.

#2 gave me goosebumps. I’m not kidding. Such a perfect little movie. And, along with Local Hero, my favorite one-two punch of any film director. I still quote lines from Gregory’s Girl, much to the chagrine of my wife who doesn’t understand it. I think it’s a guy’s film. And, you’re right, it’s definitely of the time. If I saw it for the first time today, I would not have the same reaction. It helps to be a teenager while viewing this. Or at least thinking back to those awkward days of youth.

If you go to the US Amazon site for the Gregory’s Girl DVD, a review I wrote eight years ago is still right on top.

Thanks for the nostalgia, Dan, I really thought it was going to be Indy at #2. I know what I’m watching again tonight.

@Avitable, It’s possible that both those films are of their time, and re only great due to my nostalgia. I’m pretty sure they would still hold up though. Providing you like well crafted romantic comedies of course.
